David_218
After serving me for some 25 years, my Browning Hunting knife is ready for retirement as it won't hold a sharp edge like it use to. My Hunting Friends have "Buck" brand knives and I was thinking about buying a Model 110 Folding Hunter "Alaskan Guide Series" Cost is about $60. Buck Knives also makes the regular 110 Folding Hunter and I can buy one for around $31. I was just wondering if the $60 knife had any real advantages over the cheaper $31 knife. They claim the "Alaskan Guide Series" holds an edge better and isTitanium Aluminum Nitride coated. Don't know what this means but I just don't want to spend the extra $30 on a knife that is no better than the less expensive Model 110 Folding Hunter Buck Knife. I would appreciate any commits and help on this one. <THANKS>
too_pointer
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I have 2 Buck folding hunters. I like them but wouldn't rate them very high on holding an edge. I don't think I would buy another one. There are probably better knives out there for just a little more $$. too_pointer
JimT
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I have a Shrade knife that has been good to me. I like a small folding knife for gutting. Easy to handle.
Tominator
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife My tried and true knives were both "freebies" for re-upping with Buckmasters. My favorite one is a Gerber. I like that knife a lot. The other knife is a Western which has a gut hook on it, which I love.
tedicast
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I carry a Buck 110, and a Wyoming knife, any time I am Deer hunting. Haven't had a problem with my 110 holding an edge either.
Guest bowhunter56
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife Either buck would work well, not sure about the difference and price difference, either way they both are made of us steel, which is hard, and requires a diamond stone to sharpen well, but once sharpened they will hold an edge. HOpe that helps a little. You may want to go into the buck website and look at each knife, i am sure they show pictures. see what you can tell from that.. wtnhunt
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife My gerber gator non-serrated knife is my favorite hands down. It remains sharp and holds a really good sharp edge. I have a couple buck knives and they are ok, but do not come close to the gerber. The buck folding knife would near the bottom of my list. Have been pretty happy with my buck fillet knife though. I have a cabelas outfitter series caping knife that would probably be second behind the gerber. It has held a really good sharp edge. Have a schrade guthook, it would probably be third on my list. Have a case folding knife that would also be ahead of the buck folding knife. Guess the buck folding knife is at the bottom of my list, but it is still usefull.
BigBuckVideo
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I use a Buck 110 and I have never had a problem with it holding an edge. It took a while to get the right edge on mine to begin with but once I did I can run it over a stone a time or two and it will be back to shaving hair. AJ
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I have used many brands of knives through the years. I have had Buck, Schrade, Case, Gerber, Puma, Cold Steel, and a couple custom knives. I like the custom knives the best, but they are expensive. For a production knife, I prefer Cold Steel. Mainly, I do not like 420 or 440 stainless steel knives. They do not hold an edge that great. I prefer knives with AUS8A, or ATS34 steel. They are better at holding an edge without being a beast to sharpen. The Alaskan Guide knife you mentioned uses S30V steel. This is a fairly new steel that starts out as powder. The powder is compressed under significant force to a homogenous, solid state and the steel is rolled to required size. Molecules are uniform, inclusions of impurities are insignificant and the development of large chrome carbides should not occur. I have had knive with hard and/or soft spots in the edge. They are not fun to sharpen or use. This technology should give a very good quality blade that is consistant throughout its length. As for the Titanium Aluminum Nitride coating, well, I feel it is a gimic. The TinAlN coating is used in the machining world for better tooling life and to speed up machining process. This coating is used to reduce the heat buildup of the tooling while cutting metal. I really do not see heat buildup as a problem while using a knife. I will probably get a knife using S30V steel. If it is the Cabela's knife or something else, I don't now. I do think it is worth checking out.

I went through field dressing 4 deer without having to sharpen this year.
Orion_70
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I use the buck 110 too.. elkoholic
Re: Question About A Hunting Knife I have had no problems with any of the Buck knifes I own. Remember, the harder the steel the more difficult it is to get a good edge on it, but the longer it will last. As for the difference in the two, the Alaskan Guide Series is more of a marketing ploy, and I seriously doubt you would gain much, if anything, for the added price. JUNK. [/ QUOTE ] I have a new gut hook that I haven't used yet. My primary knife is a Cutco hunting knife (orange handle ) which I absolutely love. However, I would love to have a K-bar since I never actually got one while I was in the Marine Corps.
