advice between 2 muzzleloaders

1) CVA Optima camo with blued barrel. Clearanced for $165.00 I have had my eye on this for awhile, they just marked it down. There was one stainless with camo thumbhole stock. It is gone. I was kind of wanting that one. This is a bare muzzleloader.

2) Traditions Yukon in a kit with scope. $199.00 It is blak with blued barrel. I have a little Traditions book that shows their guns & it has this kit listed for$261.00. It looks pretty good. The pamphlet says 150 grain capacity. Is this a bad thing or is it no big deal. I know nothing about muzzleloaders, just thinking about getting one & starting to use it. which one do you think is the best gun/deal ?

Of those two, think I would more likely go with the cva. Those kits, the scopes are usually functional, but not so great and will end up being replaced, therefore I would not let that or the kit be a determining factor. Also agree with Chris about finding a TC. The omega's are being clearanced out at several places.

I ended up buying the Optima today. Liked the looks of it alot better. I had the same feeling about the scope. Figured it was a pretty low end one. They did have the Omega clearanced for $249.99. Who knows, if they get down below $200 I might buy one of them too. I think they had 3 of them & this is a little store in a fairly small town that doesn't get near the traffic that most do. I have run across several pretty good deals there. I wanted to buy one last year. I kept telling myself that if they got down below $170 I was getting one. Well when they got there I said when they get down to $150 I'll get one. Well they never made it. They were gone. They did have a Optima in camo with the thumbhole stock & nickel barrel. that is the one I was really wanting but somebody bought it before Christmas. I think it was at $229 or $249, don't remember for sure, I was waiting on it to get below $200 but it didn't make it. I am pretty happy with it. Saying that ,I just got it & have not shot it. I like the looks of it & can't wait to go shoot. I have a shotgun scope on my Winchester 1300 (my main deer gun) that I am going to put on it for now. Started putting it on tonight. Everything was perfect except the screws that hold my scope mounts to the gun are to small. So I will have to buy a different mount , which is no big deal. I might end up buying a new scope when I get the mounts. Wish I could shoot this weekend but have to work so won't have time. Oh well, enough babbling.

Man you have to get out there and powder that rifles behind and make some smoke. If it were me I would line things up at 25 yards and when sighted in at that range move on back. BP rifles can be persnickity when it comes to bullet, sabot and powder charge but that is the fun. Your choice would not be mine as I am partial to the American made rifles due to a less than stellar experience with the offshore rifles.

I put a 3x9 scope on the gun & shot it yesterday. Shot at 100 yards & had it sighted in great with 6 shots. Was shooting 1" groups at 100 yards. Later I will try longer distances & see what happens. Very pleased with it so far. Shot 295 powerbelts with 100 grains of powder. Shot pellets & two different brands of loose powder, shot same with all the powder. Shot a powerbelt that another guy had that was a hollow point, it hit right on also. I think I will stick with loose powder. It is a little cheaper.

Been really happy with shooting loose powder here. Pellets may be more convenient, but you can better custom tailor your loads with loose powder. My gun seems to really like 120 grains of pyrodex with the sabots I am using. Going to pick up some triple 7 next time I get to wal mart, should be on clearance.

I would go with the CVA. I would never buy a combo gun (gun and scope), unless its a real high-quality scope. Chances are the scope with the Traditions isn't waterproof/fogproof and won't take a lot of shock.

wait and see if any T/C's go on sale.

That is the advice I'd take. ;) You could probably get a basic (black synthetic stock and blued barrel) Omega for around $300 or $400.

  • 2 weeks later...

yea the walmart here has had a Omega for $184 for a couple weeks now. I am waiting. If nobody buys it before long they will mark it down to around $150 & I'll buy it. If it sells before then ,oh well, I guess. I don't need it, just at a good price. So if it gets down to $150 I'll buy it & keep it for my boy for Christmas,.
