What's the difference between a Muzzleloader scope and a Rifle scope.

Here's the deal...I got a CVA 50cal. 209 Optima Magnum for Christmas and I'm wanting to strap like a 3x9x44 Rifle Scope on it and I was told that it wouldn't work...

I asked why and what was the difference and for the life of me I couldn't get a straight answer from the guy on why other then it wouldn't work...

Is this true...

I myself don't see any difference other then one Scope says Muzzleloader and the other one says Rifle...

So now I'm not sure what to do...

Can you help me out...

Thanks...

You can put a rifle scope on a ml Dale. It will work just fine. All I have used on any muzzleloaders ever have been rifle scopes and they have held up just fine.

Had been told that the recoil from a ml would damage a rifle scope too, but I dont believe it. Think if I remember right this topic came up here a good while back, and think AJ or someone else that has a good bit of knowledge and understanding on the topic chimed in and said that the idea of a rifle scope not being able to handle the recoil was pretty well a bunch of nonsense.

As far as I can tell it has more to do with objective focus than anything. Typically shotgun/mz scopes are focused at something like 75 yards whereas rifle scopes are 100+. I have been using the same Nikon and Leupold rifle scopes on my muzzleloaders for years and have never had an issue with them. Shoot same spot time after time - year after year - I don't even consider the "specialty" scopes especially the gimmicky ones.

The ML / shotgun scopes are set parallax free at shorter distances than traditional rifle scopes. Other than that there is no problem whatsoever using a rifle scope on a ML.

I have used MZ, shotgun and rifle scopes on muzzleloaders with no problems at all. With most newer MZ's claiming 200 plus yd. accuracy the shorter parallax shouldn't be a concern.

As far as recoil goes I know my MZ doesn't " kick " as much as a 416 Rigby and I have never seen anything on a scope which says you can't use it for either.

An airgun though is a whole 'nother story.

I have used a regular rifle scope on my front stuffer for about 5 years now and no problem. As mentioned I believe there is a difference in where the parralax is set. There may be a difference in eye relief too. If you use a rifle scope find one with as near 4 inches of eye relief as you can find. The scar on the forehead will be a banner of pride but getting it hurts like the dickens. Now how do I know that. Lol
