Squirrelhunter91
I found this rub or scratching or whatever you want to call it on our property last weekend. I can't figure out what the heck could've made this thing. It's on a black birch tree about 15" in circumference. It was made next to a field with black berries, raspberries and apples in it. So either a buck or a bear could be staking out a food source. It's either a big buck or a bear. I have seen both on the property. I can't tell if it's brow tine/tine gouges or claw marks. Hopefully someone will be able to tell.
Guest zac
how high is it off the ground? and are there any tracks? probably a bear
Squirrelhunter91
It's a good 2 1/2 to 3 feet off the ground, but the tree is slanted so that can be misleading and no there aren't any tracks so it must be older than the last snow storm which was only like two weeks ago. wtnhunt
Think bear Joe. To me looks more like claw marks than tine marks.
Tominator
I have zero experience with bear rubs, but I've seen deer rub trees like that. Looks to me like the brow tines did most of that rubbing. Spacing looks perfect for deer.
Ravin R10 man
Buck rub...a bear will reach up 6 foot or better and even chew on the tree, and claw marks are spaced evenly about 1 and 1/2 inches...thats NOT a bear sign post... JoshM
I was thinking a bear rub. Time to get out the trail camera and find out.

I agree with Martin here. 2 1/2 to 3 feet off the ground is a buck, not a bear. A bear stands up when they make their territorial scratches, and you would see more claw marks above and below the worst warn spot, in the bark. I've seen a lot of bear sign posts. tlott89
i think its a buck rub. a bear would of made a mark up higher on the tree
Strut10
Doesn't look like a bear's doin's to me. You look real close you oughta be able to pull a hair or two from that tree. It'll probably be gray or brown.
terry264
Don't know what exactly to think about that rub. Would like it investigated further. Seems kind of odd this late in the yr. for a buck to be doing that. Have any big cats around?
