toddyboman
Ok I'm not saying which brand cause we don't need to go down that road. My trucks which is 4 years old is having some 4 wheel drive issues IMO.....I hit the button/flip the switch for the 4x4 to start working and it does not seem to lock in...... Usually I attempt to put it into 4x4 at the start of my hunting lane....so I drive about 1/2 to 3/4 of mile.....plenty of time for it to lock in.....Well sometimes it DOES NOT:mad:......Now if I go to the end of this lane and turn my wheels REAL sharp then it seems to lock in.....but my question is WHY?? Any input?? Thanks:)
wtnhunt
Dont know Todd. Could be a couple different things going on. Sounds like it is probably something delaying it engaging from the switch though. Could also possibly be an issue with the hubs engaging and locking in. Still like the old levers in the floorboard for my trucks, they engage when you shift them in.
toddyboman
Thanks Williams I know lots of things could be wrong and my explanation is kinda vague. But didn't know if anyone had any ideas. :)
Guest DIRTY DUKE
If it's a chevy check the push button swith itself. The wireing behind it may be faulty, this happened on my Dads bowtie.
okiedog
Still like the old levers in the floorboard for my trucks, they engage when you shift them in. Same here. All the 4 wheel drive trucks I have owned have had the shifter in the floor. You can always take your foot and jam it in if needed:D. I have never been a fan of the push buttons. MCH
If I'm not mistaken some 4X4's have what I call "part-time" 4wheel drive. Even though you've got it engaged on the console, it doesn't actually engage until a tire spins. Not sure if that's the case here, but that's what it sounds like?? Until I got stuck Everything read as if I was in 4x4.But only the back tires would spin. The front WOULD NOT!! Luckly I was within a couple hundred yards of my parents so my dad came right up and gave me a little tug to get going:rolleyes:
wtnhunt
Todd, if it did not engage and it is a chevy, it is possible that it is in a connection. Not sure on the newer models, but my old Z71 had a plug on the front axle. It came loose on me once driving through some tall grass and brush and the truck would not go in 4wd despite it looking like it was in 4wd. I got stuck on a hillside in wet grass. After a little inspection and finding the plug loose, I fixed it so it could not come loose with tie wraps, and never had that problem again. Pretty sure that plug was for nothing more than an electronic switch that locked in the front hubs. Might be something to check.
MUDRUNNER
If it's a G.M. the switch that William is talking about is known to go bad.It engages the front diff. It's bolted to the side of the diff housing.I've had 2 G.M.'s and had to replace it on both trucks. What kind of truck is it Todd?
unioncountyslayer
Sounds like an electrical/wiring problem to me. Had this happen on one of my previous trucks, and had to have the switch replaced.
Shaun_300
Gotta know if it's a GM or not for me to be accurate. It could either be the front diff actuator or the transfer case encoder motor. Well it could be lots of things, but usually on the Chev 1/2 tons those are the first things to go. Could also be the 4x4 module or the switch itself. PM me the make and model if you don't want to "go there".
Shawn
Gotta know if it's a GM or not for me to be accurate. It could either be the front diff actuator or the transfer case encoder motor. Thats what im thinking. Saw a lot of that when i worked at a Gm Dealership. Happened to a old blazer of mine also. Switch and connections worked but the front actuator was shot. stevebeilgard
hey, we've got a very good mechanical force on these forums. i'm not one of them. so, tell them the make, year, and model, and you'll get a good answer. but not from me. sorry. from what you've said, it's a solenoid or swithch problem. which is good. some of the cheaper parts... HOYTnMUZZYboy
If it's a bowtie then im guessing its your switch. Mine does the same thing. Also had a buddies do the same thing. I pulled the dash apart wiggled a few wires and shzam no problems since haha. Like others have said bowties seem to have a bad switch. Do a lil tinkering with your wires and see what happens.
