Stand Stealing

What is really pathetic about all this, is we more than likely know the bad guy, or he knows us, and where we hunt.......

I knew one guy, or more then likely his kid and his friends, that would steal stands out of the area i hunt.Me and his dad hunt a lot of the same ground and I ran into him one day out there while he was trying to hang a stand and we started talking.I helped him get his stand hung, he told me I could use it as well if his truck wasnt in the parking lot.We started comparing notes and we both had numerous stands hung out in the same properties, we came to an agreeent, if one of us wasnt there the other guy could use any of the stands in the properties, if one of our trucks was there the other guy would just goto the next property.

It actually worked out pretty good, he farms so most of the season I had twice as many stands to pick from, we both hunt different gun seasons so they didnt overlap, and the guy gave me permission for all the ground he farmed. And best of all things quit dissapearing, for me anyway, he musta told his kid and his friends to leave things alone.Either way I never had a stand dissapear again.

several years ago I had my API Grand Slam Magnum Supreme stolen off the base of a tree. I was hot. I know who did it but proving it is another thing. I do know I better never catch him out & about & with one of those stands with him. It will be going with me even if it wasn't mine. I still hang stands & lock them up. Still leave my climber sometimes with a lock on it. Luckily no more have been stolen. I have taken several stands down. I have a pretty good collection of stands that I have taken down over the years. All the ground I take care of & lease is not supposed to have anyone else on it or people I allow & know about. I know if they put a stand up. I find one that isn't supposed to be there I get it, have had to come back with bolt cutters & get some. I also leave a note in a sealed ziploc bag & pin it to the tree. I put my phone #, name & reason stand was taken on the note. Tell them if they want it back to call me. Funny thing is I have never had any of them call, LOL. Guess they don't want to fess up so I know who it is.

Yeah and possibly a law suit.

It make requirea little extra work but how about some strap on climbing sticks that you can carry out with you. That would force them to carry a ladder all the way into the woods to get your stand. A little hard labor might actually deter some theives.

My Father-in-law was having trouble with people climbing his wooden fence and stealing things...He found where they were climbing and attached some rather large treble hooks with 2 inch long deck screws on his side of the fence...

I have heard of people doing this to their car radios but not on wooden fences..

Needless to say when he went out the next day, he knew who was stealing his stuff...

He hasn't had that problem since...

Man thats gonna leave a mark...

I agree with RangerClay about a lawsuit pending. This would be a great deterent but very dangerous. I know if this was done & somebody got hurt, no matter what, he would be in a heap of trouble.

so far i havent had any stolen, and i feel bad for those of you that have, they arent cheap, and to know that some one has them would make me mad too, i have 4 stands out now my sky scraper, 2 lock ons and my equlizer climbing stand, i have a chain and lock around them all but if some one wants to steal them bolt cutters will do the job, i think only chains and locks tetur them if they dont have bolt cutters with them.

I use a Baby Gorilla, and I take it down and put it up every time I hunt. Its a little more of a pain to have to leave earlier, and lug in a stand along with everything else, and set it up in the dark before daylight, then do the same after dark. But I don't get it stolen.

Same thing here

9 stands in 8 years. I got fed up with it last year and switched to the Millenium Treestand. I bought one stand and 6 receivers then in early August bought 20 more receivers, my hunting buddy did the same. I sold all my portable hang on stands and for the first time in years, no stand stole!!!!. By far the most comfortable stand I have ever used. I had all 26 receivers in the field this year and I carry the stand in and out with me to each location. It is light, just 14 pounds and easy to hang on the receiver once you do it a time or two. After a full season of use I'll never go back. If you can't see a stand protruding off a tree in the woods, 99% of the thieves don't notice just the steps or receiver. They blend in great. Furthermore unless you know what you are looking at if you do discover the reciever unless you have the stand no real reason to take it. Just my theory anyways.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sore subject here, lost alot of stands over past five years lost two hang ons and what is even worse lost a climber no more than 100 yards from my house. went out put my climber on a tree locked it up went back a couple days later lock was cut and stand was gone. Last year i even had a farm were i hunted that ive been hunting for about seven years but there is another hunter that has hunted this farm for 25 years upset that im there lots of room 400 acres but i had four stands up and would go into hunt last year to find my first 6 or 7 pegs missing so i cuold not get in my stands nice way to ruin a day of hunting.Hes going to have to do more than that to chase me away. I hate jealous hunters!!!!! And thieves!!!!

That's why I'm afraid to get one of the nice trail cams. We are lucky that with all the stands and cameras we have out, nothing has been stolen, but I think I would cry if I lost a nice Cuddeback!

Yea my brother was telling me that he wanted to put a trail camera up at a state park to scout deer. I told him that he's nuts. There are so many people in there that it'd be gone before he could change the batteries. It is unfortunate.

In terms of stands I haven't gotten one stolen yet, however I have built ones where I hunt on my relative owned land. Then if I hunt somewhere else I pack in a Summit Openshot.

Its that bad around here too! You dont leave anything in the woods you want to keep! We have had feeders stolen stands locked down stolen and trail cams ripped off the trees and stolen! I gotten any more to leave my ladder stands booby trapped so if they try to climb up to cut the lock they will fall! Its happened once now!!
