Guest Andrea
Anyone have a tried and true recipe for stopping a cough?? I coughed ALL NIGHT. I have been taking Zicam, MucinexDM and Chloraseptic cough drops. None of which seem to be helping. Not only am I not able to sleep but I can't go hunting. And it's makin me pretty darn cranky to say the least. I'm not going to the doctor. They always prescribe anitbiotics which wouldn't help anyway. Randy
:eek:Is that what happens after this nasty head cold really kicks in? I feel miserable too!
nativetexan
If you can't stop coughing, it sounds like you might have bronchitis. Which can quickly turn to pneumonia. Go to the doctor.
RangerClay
Andrea, when my wife gets a cold she usually can expext to cough like you are now. She usually coughs so hard that she will puke. The doctor gave her a reeeeeally strong cough syrup, somethingX is all we can remember of the name but it has codine in it. This stuff will make you sleep I guarantee it!!!! This stuff is so powerful that my wife could not drive so she only took it at night. Go see a doctor and tell him/her that you want "the good stuff" (that was the name that my wife gave it)>
Guest Scottishhunter
My mum gives me some honey if I have a nasty cough and it works wonders, its an old Scottish remedy.
Guest Andrea
Joe...my pharmacist is good about giving me stuff like that. But he's not open on Sunday. Do you know of anything that might be a quick fix so that I can go hunting this afternoon??

Guest Andrea
No, not recently. I read somewhere about taking large amounts of vitamin C though. So I just took 2500 mg. Ever done that?

VermontHunter
Here try this it really seems to work well .. Water and other liquids, such as fruit juices, are probably the best cough syrups. They help soothe the throat and also moisten and thin mucus so it can be coughed up more easily. You can make a simple and soothing cough syrup at home by mixing 1 part lemon juice with 2 parts honey. Use as often as needed. I'd get my tail to the doctors office real soon if the cough becomes to persistant to deal with ..
Guest Andrea
Thanks guys, keep em coming. I may try them all........
Tominator
Quite honestly, I think you need to get a prescription. Dextromethorphan (sp?) works pretty good. Codeine in a pinch, lol. You're looking for an antitussis. Robitussin works pretty good for us. Get the one without the antihistamine so it doesn't make you sleepy. Hot tea with lots of honey and lemon works pretty good too. wyohunter
tho not a cure but you'll be able to hunt.....DUCT TAPE yes duct tape, apply liberally over your mouth, and get in your stand , now when the cough urge hits plug your nose and cough away, it will be silent. however the pressure the cough creates will need to go somewhere, and that means it usually passes as gas....two bright sides here, first the deer will thinks its a grunt from a buck and be curious, and second, you already have your nose pinched :D
stevebeilgard
lol at wyohunter. luke has a good recepie. i make my wife (and myself) a cup of tea with 1/4 cup of honey, 1 shot whisky, and 1 shot brandy or cognac. it helps the sore throat, and you no longer care you have a cough. lol. everything i say is generally a joke, but the above is what we do. Guest Andrea
Wyo....not sure I am gonna try that one. Sounds like an injury waiting to happen. LMBO:D:D Gonna have to pass on the whiskey thing too Steve....I just don't have any and I'd be a poor shot in my tree stand if I did. ( Never mind the fact that I'd probably be asleep) I am gonna keep taking the vitamin C today and choke down all the orange juice I can stand. ( I've been peeing like crazy now, lol) Tomorrow I will go get some cough meds from the pharmacy with codiene. And hopefully that will help. Thanks y'all. unioncountyslayer
Andrea, you're going to think I'm crazy, but this isn't a joke. The ladies that work for me swear that if you'll put some Vick's Vapor Rub on your feet at night before you go to bed, then put a pair of socks on (to keep the rub from getting on your sheets) it will keep you from coughing at night. Honestly I havn't tried it yet, since I haven't been coughing, but again, they swear by it. It's worth a shot!

Mark hasn't tried this; because he just rubs vicks vapour rub on top of his head and then puts on a toboggan! He says that it keeps his feet from getting cold!:D:D Seriously, we take cough syrup with codine in it as well. Works well and makes you sleep great! ruttinbuc
I know you like to hunt and don't want to miss a minute, but your health is much more important. Sounds like the start of bronchitis which leads to pneumonia. Get some rest today and see the doctor tomorrow.
