LifeNRA
This year I will be changing my string and cable. Since I bought a portable bow press, thought I would do this myself. I enjoy the fact that I can work on my own bow and not need to drive 50-60 miles to have anything done! LOL! So, my questions is this. 1. How do you all change your own string and cable? 2. What are the steps you do to insure proper installation? 3. Once the string and cable are off, what do you do to the cam and idler wheel? 4. Do you serve in the peep and other accessories after the string is on? I would imagine not full tension naturally. Any other tips would be useful, THANKS! Tom2008
1. I use a bow press. That is only way that I know of to compress the bow to get the string and cable off. 2. Make sure you look at how it is on there before you take it off to insure proper installation. 3. Leave them the way they are or you can use some kind of lubricant on the cams. It always helps to make sure those are smooth. 4. Yes you do serve in the peep and the nocking point after the string is on. Usually you may have compress the bow to get the serving in the middle of the string, but after it is between the string you can just serve away at full tension. This also depends on how you serve the bow. Everyone has there own way of doing it.
Straight Shooter
1. Agree with Tom2008 2. Agree with again- rule of thumb; measure twice cut once! Make sure you put them back on the way they came off. Also, remember to put twist back in the string. 3. Check the cam side to side play, bushings could be worn is the only other thing I would do with the bow compressed. New strings aren't going to help out much if the cams are worn. There should be a little play in them but not much. 4. Agree Good luck!
hutchies
1. I have an Ultrapress by Gritty over on AT. 2. I take them out of the pack and inspect. Press bow and what I do is as I remove the old one I install the new one so that I don't get it all apart and can't figure out what goes where. Like when installing the string I will pull the old string off the peg and put the new one on. As I remove the old one I route the new one the same way. 3. I don't ever have it all off at the same time. I either have at least the string or the cable on. I do clean the groves with Qtips while I have it torn down though. 4. Actually they will stay tighter if you serve them under full tension. I do all my servings under full tension. Tips: Most strings are pre-stretched so you won't have to worry about adding or removing twists til after the first 150 to 200 shots. Check for Cam lean. If you have any make according twists to the Y cables to take it out. Never Wax the servings on your String. Also if you are going to start doing your own it would be best to buy a bowvise and level kit so that you can everything back in tune. Here is what I bought. http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=33 http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=1318 If you use a STS go ahead and serve the small section of string it touches..........Better Safe than sorry. Guest RisingSunOutdoors
Tip: Take some pictures of the bow with everything on it, or video yourself taking things off...then if you think U did something wrong you can rewind! I take mine to the shop and have them put on...I'd like to get a press and do more work on my bows myself though.
