Re: Look what my 8 yr old got...

Thanks everyone!!!

Colby was very happy with his first deer and I think I was equally excited.

Here is the story....

Colby and I arrived to the stand a little later than I wanted to. I put some corn out where I wanted the deer to stand if Colby was going to take a shot. The corn was to get them to stay longer and it was a yardage marker for him. 1st pile was 10 yards and the 2nd pile was 15 yards.

This little buck came in just a few minutes after we settled in our blind.

He gave Colby a shot at 15 yards 20 minutes into the hunt. Colby missed and was very upset. He didn’t want to do it again. This was the second miss on a deer. I talked him in to trying again and he agreed to try again. We stayed still and he returned. I was telling Colby where to aim, let the pin float until it reached the spot behind the elbow of the deer, and slowly squeeze the trigger. Click (the sound I hear when the release opened and THWACK, the sound I heard when the arrow hit the deer. I was a little shocked. I expected a miss. The deer dropped in his tracks 15 yards away! In 30-45 seconds he expired.

After we had our victory high five; I hugged him and told him I was proud of him.

We loaded up his deer and headed to the cleaning tree. In 45 min to 1 hour our hunting trip was over, but the memory is going to last a life time.

We didn’t want to disturb mom, who was hunting also. So Colby and I parked under a Big Oak tree and talked about his hunt some more. How mom and I thank the Lord for giving us these creatures to hunt, kill and eat. I even mentioned that a verse in the bible mentions hunting with a bow and arrow.

I also told Colby that I will not only pet the deer but I will place a piece of grass (or something like that) in the deer’s mouth as a symbol of thanks to the animal for letting me kill him and for good luck hunting in the future.

Just my thing…sounds weird but hey, it seems to work for me.

When we were cleaning the deer we saw that the arrow penetrated a little further left than he was aiming on the quartering away deer. The arrow broke the rib on the entering side, went through the liver, diaphragm, one lung and lodged in the spine. The tip of the broadhead entered the spine about ¾” and severed the cord, thus paralyzing him. The liver shot with a razor sharp (shaving sharp) broadhead will empty an animal of its much needed red oil in seconds!

Also when we were cleaning his deer Colby gave me a hug and said “Thanks for being proud of me and letting me shoot my first deer.” I got tears in my eyes!

At that moment I realized that some kids never hear that from their parents and never have the opportunity that my kids have when it comes to experiencing the outdoors.

Holy Crap!

8 years old. My oldest is 11 and doesn't want anything to do with a bow.

Chris, did you forget to train him early? Heck my son was shooting a 10# youth bow when he was 5. He started bowhunting when he was 8. Now he's 18 hunting 2 legged dear more than anything else. Only thing now is he's playing more catch and release but he's the one that gets released. smirk.gif

laugh.gif Colby and I went over all of the responses...he couldn't believe how many people responded.

He thought it was neat for me to put his picture here as well...

That smile does tell it all. I am very proud of him.

I never pushed him to hunt, one day he just asked if he could shoot a deer and I gave him the oppourtunity to do so. He is hooked now!
