im sure this has been asked before, i never have slug hunted just bow hunting, the 3rd gun season this year my county and a few other have Chronic Waisting Disease slug permits that i can buy right over the counter for 5 bucks, my bro told me he's gonna take me to the spot where he slug hunts, and i have a 870 super mag with 30" barrel and i was wondering can i shoot a slug outa that barrel without having to buy a slug barrel and if so what choke should i use, ill be using 2 3/4 lightfield slugs any info appreciated

Judging by you DU avatar your 870 is a 30" duck gun with a smooth bore. If you shoot the Lightfields you will be wasting your money. They are made for a rifled barrel, not a smooth bore. I would take them back and trade them in for some Brennekes Magnum slugs or another brand that are made for a smooth bore. Whatever brand you choose, be sure to stay away from sabot slugs. Also you may want to try a couple brands because if your gun is a full choke it may not throw slugs well. Hope this helps! ;)

If you have screw in choke tubes buy the rifled choke tube and go with saboted slugs.

OR, you can buy a rifled slug barrel in a more suitable length and you would be good to go using regular rifled slugs. A rifle sighted barrel with rifling would be a great start but you could go all the way and buy a cantilevered rifled barrel and add a scope.

If you don't choose any of the above use a choke tube in Improved cyl. and try some different slugs through it until you find one type or brand you like.

A lot of this depends on how much you want to or are willing to spend. Figure out your budget and adjust accordingly.

I hope I'm not the only one confused here.

You don't want to buy anything?

We helped you alot?

You are just going to use what you have and hope for the best!

Why did you ask the question in the first place?

?????????????

I think what he meant is that he doesn't want to go buy a $100 slug barrel, when a smooth bore and rifled slugs will do fine.

And I agree. A ton of deer have been killed by the old Foster type, rifled slugs.

i was simply asking if i could use my field barrel, and yes i know im gonna have to go buy certain slugs, i mean im not looking to buy anything like a slug barrel, exactly what tominator said

You're all set bud. Just go get some rifled slugs, not sabot slugs and you'll be fine. I would suggest flinging a couple first to see where your slugs hit vs. your POA though.

Good luck!

After reading this post, it got me thinking about my 870 (smooth bore). I am wondering how accurate it would be if I bought some of these slugs and hit the range...guess I need to find out.

One question, I don't have the improved cylinder choke, I only have 2 chokes for my shotgun...I have the 'Modified' and 'Super Full'. Will the Modified work with these 'rifled slugs'?

Thanks folks.
