bigmoss
I am finally going to start hunting Turkey here this coming spring and bought a new Remington 870 Pump. Without spending a fortune what do you guys recommend I buy as the basics. It will have to be hand calls as I am sure I wont be able to use the mouth diaphrams one. What load do you recommend for the gun ? Should I bother with a turkey vest or are they just for show ? Out of these which one would you guys recommend http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat470128 Please fill me in with your opinions. Thanks
toddyboman
Ammo for your gun....really you need to see what patterns the best out of your gun Turkey vest.....I think is very useful...It carries your decoys, all your calls, extra ammo, gloves, fase mask, and even your bird after you get one....So I would get one. I have had the same one for a couple years. Also I have found this little seat to be worth MILLIONS over the years. It sits you up just a little bit that makes a world of difference and it keeps you off the wet ground. And this thing is VERY useful too... Rhino
Some good points there made by Todd. I'm with Todd on that knee pad to help hold your gun in place while you're using you hands to work calls. I even carry a spare one in my turkey vest. Without spending a fortune what do you guys recommend I buy as the basics. In addition to a vest you'll need these basic items to put in it: at least 1 slate call and 2 strikers. Sandpaper or ruffing pad to prep your slate call(s) a box call or 2. Chalk to prep your box call(s) crow call to get birds to shock gobble during the day. (Learn to do an owl call with your voice. It's pretty easy) pruning sheers small flashlight light weight binocs knife extra gloves and facemask. They do have a way of disppearing and/or getting lost, especially your trigger finger hand glove. zip lock bags to put your calls in if it starts raining. decoys are optional so your call on that...I personally don't think they are necessary, especially when it comes to basics (Strut and I are about the only ones here that rarely, if ever use decoys anymore. We're old school) Put some TP in a zip loc bag. Comes in real handy when you need it. Always remember to carry drinking water with you. keep some bug spray in your vest too. your choice of ammo Now you know why a vest is a necessary basic turkey hunting item. Hope I didn't forget something but I wouldn't be surprised if I did.

Guest spurcollector
I load my vest down about like Rhino. I have to have it. I carry a few calls and strikers and I need those compartments. I do take a decoy. Me without my vest is like Batman without his utility belt. oldreloader
I like the convienence of the vest and having everything together.I like slate calls.(I got dentures and havent found a diaphram that works since)I prefer the Primos Power Crystal.I also carry a box call and a push call.Basically I load my vest about like Rhino.I still use decoys too depending on the circumstances. Guest Steve_Foate
In addition to the great advise Rhino gave you. Go out and find the calls that best suit you along with a CD of real turkeys calling. I like treetop turkeys for a CD one of the best out on the market. http://www.treetopturkeys.com/
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
Bigmoss I agree with all that is said. I love the vest too as it keeps all the stuff organized in one package. I bought one several years ago at wally world for $34.00 and will not leave home without it. The little seat that was shown is also a necessity I don't leave home without. That puppy will save your legs and back. I also carry a cushion to sit on too. Hey once you get into this turkey you will feel like a walking junk man like the rest of us. Pattern your gun to see what works best out of it. Keep your shots 40 yds and under, practice with your calls till you are evicted from the house and go out and buy the biggest bag of patience you can find as patience kills turkeys. MichiganHunter
I have a 870sp and shoot Remington Premier High Velocity Magnum 3 1/2in 2oz of #5 shot, and i shot a fall bird at 45 yards and was very comfortable at that distance, I would also recomend getting a good choke tube, i use a Jelly Head super full and it works great. Get your self ONE hen decoy and u will be fine, and one good box or a slate call, but i would recomend gettin some mouth calls and practicing with them, i had a hard time at first with them but after a wile i got better and they are nice for them up close birds. dlriggins
this is what i take with me vest with 2 slate calls and 3 strikers, a tom gaskins turkey call (kind of a cross between a slate and box call) it is easy to use one handed,a hydration bladder, a crow call and owl hooter, some form of bug repellent and a box of mouth calls (I find premos calls to most comfortable for me because I can bend the metal frame) and just because I know the guys will get on me dont forget the shotgun and license and a pair of binos will serve you well

Thanks First off find you a bud that has everything and will carry it for you! And most important is that he can call good! And get you the heaviest load your shoulder can handle! You can work up from there! Good luck!!!
