silvertip_co
Shall we meet in Taylor Park or somewhere for second rifle combined elk? Oct 18-26 or so. We had a great time in 06. And one guy did get a 5x5 thanks to a lot of hard work. Now its our turn . I gotta knock out a mulie tag I hope to draw but that wont take long then I can focus on bull elks. I don't have a camper trailer bought for us yet but am shopping for one. I did make ten days hotel reservations in Gunnison I could share if someone needs a room, but it's lots better to elk camp AT elk camp. Then again that jacuzzi tub is really nice after ten hours hiking. Lemme know. If we pick a spot I'll be glad to scout it as we did last time. snapper
Sorry buddy, planning a hunt for '09 and the wife would kill me if I went to CO this year and another hunt next year. I still admire that 5X5 on the wall and remember the hard work Steve did for me to take that elk. I can't thank him enough...I wouldn't have made that climb without his motovation. Guest Zirkel
The Gunnison area of Colorado is experiencing one of it's worst winters in many years. Winterkill is going to be really terrible if the weather doesn't change soon. http://www.wildlife.state.co.us/NewsMedia/PressReleases/Press.asp?PressId=4713 Zirkle
stevebeilgard
i know severe weather is bad on wildlife, but i have to say that these animals have perpetual hard winters. i think they will come out just fine, with a little help from the g&f. the elk will do well, anyway. it is tougher on the deer. silvertip_co
I agree with Steve, the elk will be fine, plus the DOW is feeding now so I dont forsee any major probs. We can always try another location if someone knows a better place. It's just TP is so central to all of Colo. I know a good place up in 37 but would have to scout for a spot for all of us to camp. Also got a spot in 35 thats hot and has lots of room for a group camp but water is limited. As my original post suggested we can meet in TP or some where. They just found 8 Bighorns dead near Gunnison. Out of a herd of 50 , that's pretty substantial winterkill. Autopsy showed primary cause to be Pneumonia. The deer are plentiful and elk are very tolerant, however, this Winter is EXTREMELY harsh. Daytime highs are running around 0 and nighttime lows are -25 to-35, with record amounts of snow there's going to be alot of death this year in the Gunnison area. Gunnison is an incredible place. Awesome beauty 8 months a year but those other 4 are unimaginable. But, it won't get them all... Never has before......... And never will. silvertip_co
theres that spot up muddy creek to! I had that thought in mind. We could split up, work up each end of the mtn, send a group up top, and have em SURROUNDED

silvertip_co
My intention was to drop off $50.00 to the DOW Friday to help buy food for the Gunnison deer and elk but our good Gov Ritter gave the DOW $1.7M ,out of the GOCO fund I think, so we otto be in good shape. That said I'll be buying lots more Colo Lottery tickets this yr to help replenish the fund. Heck maybe I'll win enought to buy a camper and help the outdoors too. As well Coors beer donated 200tons of expired grain which will be made into wafers to feed the herd which is struggling with 8' (yeah thats 96") of snow pack. I'll buy a case or three of Coors this yr too. Hope to see some of y'alls in October.
