they should have the road fixed in a cuppel of weeks so maby i can get back in there without going clear from vail.

We didnt draw mulie tags for 55 so now we have to scope out the leftover list today, very disappointing. No tags for 35, 37, 56 left so we'll probably have to go to 444 again or maybe 38. This is gonna make elk hunting hard as I wanted to knock the mulie out in same unit before we elk hunted. To do that now we gots to travel MORE. Exxon will love us some fall.

good luck spotting elk this weekend, charlie.

Due to changing our church membership form GA to Pueblo we are gonna go scout July 6 week or 13th week. Wanted to go June 29 but the pastor's retirng and they are inducting us into this congregation that day. Plus I ned the extra week to ge t axes and ytags apid and get a plug and brake module for the new truck. I hate delaying a good 4 day camp trip.

good work getting the guides job. i trust you'll be a guide, and not an outfitter???. anyway, congrats. maybe ask the outfitter if he'll haul out elk when they are down, for a price. or if he knows anyone who does that type of work. i'll bet plenty of elk move in....

Plan tomorrow is to wire up my new truck for the camper trailer and install the camper brake modulator under then dash. Then all I need is one new propane tank and a title( that's another story)and tags and we'll be ready to scout. Doctor followup appointment (cancer/notcancer) July 9 will not get me into the woods that week so we are looking at the trip to Cement Creek to scout on July13th or 20th. I hate it I was off almost all this week and just had to rest :( after my 'procedure'( heck we coulda been campin and scoutin in the West Elk Mtns).

wow. still snow. good thing the camp is only a mile off the road. the other colorado trip was a bit too far in on rough roads. hard on trailers.... lol

ROFL@trailers :D !!! Well I got mine alllllmost ready, gotta check the elec brakes, buy propane and tags and we are ready to go. Plan to pull out July 27 earrrrly and head to Cement Creek area for 4 days. May camp up on the Almont triangle just cause I like the view there a lot. Or not. Wife dont want me scarring up the new truck squeezin between the trees so we'll take Big Red along to do our scouting. Plan to give Cement Creek area a good look over and also the big Spring Creek drainage east of it. Between them two area I ought to burn up three days scouting. Photos to follow.

Here's a great newtome map site. It seems a bit better and clearer than google earth.

We're baaaack. Had a nice trip. 75f days-40f nights. Saw no elk. So many people camping hiking mtnbiking ATV'ing that they probably stayed high(the elk that is). But we covered almost the entire length of the valley and some side trails. For the purposes of this travelogue we'll call the places as 'above the narrows' and 'below the narrows'.

We did not photo the BLM campground (below the narrows). It's small, about 20 sites or so, 14.00 a night, next to the creek with two rest room sites. I need to find out if its open in November. Sadly most of the best elk camp sites are above the narrows and I really dont know if I could get my 24' camper trailer past that 1 mile stretch. I'd have to ride in every day on Big Red I think. Or go in with a guy ahead with a two radio to stop traffic as theres NOWHERE to turn or get out of the way in the narrows. Anyway...

One of the first few pics is the valley that Steve B and friends killed the 5x5 in when we all elk camped in 06. Not sure which valley it is. Most pics before the waterfall in the narrows are before the BLM Campground.

Above the narrows is totally 1000% elk country for the next 7 miles on both sides of the road...no priv camps, no $M homes, no ranches, no cattle, no priv ground, no mines til you get to Mt. Tilton(big mtn at the very head of the creek). Right side of the road is mostly dark timber, across the creek is mixed aspen and dark timber. Above the narrows there's just as much big elk country across the creek as there is on the right(road) side of the creek. We only photo'd three of the dozen or so great elk camp spots.

Suggestions:

1.When you come buy gas at the Conoco on Main Street (Rt 50) in Gunnison, its .19 cheaper there than north Gunnison stations 6 blocks away, and .16 cheaper than in Crested Butte. Get groc at Safeway(rt 50) in Gunnison or Clark's Market in Crested Butte.

The turn off is at mp21 on rt 135north(the Crested Butte Hwy). Its marked both Cement Creek and Crested Butte South.

2. Bring hip boots.

Great report. It is good to see some pics of that area again.

If things workout right, when my son & I go to Utah over Labor Day weekend, I am going to try to run over there for a day to do a little snooping around myself.

I am sure we can get you some help with stopping the traffic to get your trailer in to a camping spot, if necessary

How about an updated attendence list.

I am in. Probably won't get there till the middle of the day, on the 1st.

We'll be there but it may be on Monday the third as we have two deer tags need filled in unit 38( St Mary's Glacier-Blackhawk area). As soon as we get deer we're heading to C Creek with yalls. I'm hoping we tag out on day one. Found out a guy I work with has 5 acres he wants to sell us there so he's letting us scout and camp free on his place and hunt there too. It's all surrounded by BLM land.

I'll call BLM tomorrow to make sure the campground is open in Nov elk season and whether it's wise to get reservations.

I forgot I have a 4 door pickup now so if we wanna hunt above the narrow I can just haul a gang up there.

I will be truly glad when summer's over...

We were talking about going back over there on Labor Day also, as wife is off school for three days and I am off too I think. If you come to COlo give me a call. Or even if we dont go there to camp call me if you want, maybe we'll drive over to Gunny for the day and meet up with you and your son. We know one good restaurant and many more that need exploring. If you need a hotel room try the Gunnison Quality Inn, its the best hotel in COlorado.

Sounds good Charlie. I probably won't know for sure until about mid day on Sat., if we can, we will spend all day Sat. in Utah, spend most of Sunday in Colorado, and then high tail it back to SLC for a 10:50 am flight on Monday. Bad planning on my part, I should of had the return trip coming out of Denver, oh well. Not for sure where that will put us spending the night. I really don't want to have a set schedule, we are just gonna take it as it comes.

I got your number, so I will give you a call and let you know.
