Why is it?

Why is it that bowshops or hunting stores that sell archery products will not "broaden" their horizions?

What I mean by this is............I went in at least 4 local hunting stores or bowshops today that sell archery products and none of them had over 3 brands of sights. You would think that they would open themselves up more and give a little more variety. Like for instance, I would have really loved to have seen a Viper brand sight that was spoken about by a couple of guys on this forum; but nobody sells them. I just wish we had a decent shop that sold a variety somewhere close to me.

Anybody else have this problem?

my bowshop guy has a pretty good selection of all different brands of bow accessories, there has only been a few times ive had to order some stuff through him

That has been my problem here lately with most bowshops around here. They always say, "We can't get it!". I wish I had a Bass Pro or a Cabelas closer.

Have heard that we are getting a Gander Mountain close by, would it be any better?

My guess is commission. I'm sure some companies give shops a little something extra if they sell so many of a certain product.

I had a somewhat strange experience when I bought my Switchback. Just a guess, but I'm guessing commission had something to do with it. I wanted the Mathews HD Convertible rest. Since I was ordering the bow (65% let-off) and Mathews ArrowWeb quiver, I figured it would be no big deal to also order the rest. Wrong. They really push the Schaffer rest there. I did get a Schaffer, which is a great rest. But, did go to another shop and get a HD Convertible rest.

My guess is that the small bowshops just can't carry everything, just what they know that works. They generally will have what you need, not necessarily what you want. I guess that's why Cabela's, Bass Pro and Gander Mtn. does so well. Then the smaller bowshops might not want to work on it for you because you didn't buy it from them. I would rather buy it form the bowshop to establish that relationship with them.

My buddy runs a very small shop out of his house. I know he can't afford to stock everything....but go for the personal service. I'd rather wait for him to get something I want. I like having him know exactly what's going on with my bow every time I come in. ;)

My shop told me that they have to place an order and they have a set amount of time to sell it and pay the bill. Usually 6 months or more. If they buy it and it doesn't sell they are usually stuck with the bill. A good proshop ought to be able to find what you are looking for and have it there in a week or less. Most shops will have a distributor that comes in once a week. I think most will probably not want to go through the hassel if all they are ordering is one item from that particular distributor unless they are going to make some cash on it. ;)

Ive got the same problem all the bowshops carry a certain two or three brands and it don't help me when I'm trying to buy a new sight or what not. Then they always say "well we can order one for you." But I'm not one to buy something unless I've had my hands on it first.

Pretty much the way of thinking with the shops that I have dealt with. Most of them can ill afford to stock the shop with merchandise that won't sell relatively quickly. It all comes back to overhead. What separates a good shop from a great shop is that the great ones can order from their distributors and have the item you wish in your hands in 3-4 days and usually with no added shipping cost because of the volume they do with the distributor. The big one stop shops are not as concerned with the stock in the store and can aford the overhead, because by the shear purchase from wholesalers in volume they more than make up for it in reduced initial cost. However, my experiences with the one stop shops is I wopuld never let them work on my bow. Pay a little more maybe, wait a few days okay, but let the shop technician work on my bow and trust what he does is great work-Priceless!!:D
