Turkeygirl
Andy and I went steelhead fishing today.:D Didn't catch anything but I still enjoyed myself in God's great outdoors. Got up to around 40 degrees. Steelhead were rising but where we were, standing beside a dam, the fish didn't bite as much as about 15 feet in front of us by 3 other guys who caught 8 total:eek: What ticked me off though was the one guy foul hooked one and kept it, then he caught his limit of 3 and kept fishing:mad: And he and the 2 others with him, I think his sons, but older, not like kids, every cast they were casting over our lines!!! They don't deserve to be called fisherman...talk about rude and inconsiderate. Maybe they really needed the meat, but still..... I still had a good time, those guys just put a little dampness in the air. On the exciting note, Andy finally hooks into a fish and it was a monster! It was taking out his line, bending his pole, and it kep going right into the bottom of the dam in the heaviest water which was a little high and flowing hard and fast. Unbelievable...we never even got a glimpse at it..it ran up to the bottom of the dam and broke the line. I'd say he had it on for like 10 minutes almost...."the big one got away":o:rolleyes:
muggs
Too bad Andy lost that fish Ruth. Sounds like you had some rude people to deal with too. That's why I don't fish the dams and fords. There's always guys stacked up on them and it's really hard to fight fish with 20 guys standing next to you. If you walk a ways down stream, I'm sure you'll find some good holes, fish who haven't been harrassed, and some open space for yourself. You should try that next time. btw- I've been thinking about coming up to New York to do some fishing. What river do you fish? Are the NY fish spring or fall spawners? Turkeygirl
Well we went down to this other hole, no one there, but on the side were were on, it was all fallen trees and we lost more hooks and sinkers than casts, lol, so we went back up to the dam. Weren't too many people there, it gets busier in the spring. We fish Cattaraugus Creek in Springville, NY. It gets both fall and spring run steelhead. End of December Andy went with a neighbor and they caught their limit. If we get a few warm days in a row with no rain and snow melt, it makes for some great fishing. If the water is low enough, you can easily wade out into the middle which is a great spot in the middle by the dam. You might be able to look it up online - Scoby Hill Dam or Scoby Hill Park (not really a park, lol, more like some grass and trees next to a large creek)
muggs
Cattaraugus Creek is actually the stream I hear the most about and the main one I'm thinking about trying to fish. Do you get runs of salmon up there too?
Turkeygirl
Yeah, I believe we do get salmon runs in there. I heard especially in the fall some of the salmon run up to near the dam. I think down lower maybe there's a better chance of running into the salmon. We actually weren't sure if the fish Andy had on was a monster steelhead or a salmon...because it was so strong and we could never see it. It ran right up into the roaring current at the bottom of the dam.
