smo
Just wondering what the deer were hitting the most out of everyone's food plots this year? They were hitting standing corn in my neck of the woods.
wtnhunt
No standing corn left anywhere around here. Early on in the season they were still hitting the soybeans some and still hitting a plot with a spring/summer mix we planted that had grains and peas/beans. A little further into the season they were hitting the clovers and chickory. Pretty sure they are still hitting the clovers and chickory, but in the middle of the night. Tominator
Not too many deer in my area this year for some reason. I think it was due to the crop rotation, my neighbor's dogs running around all the time, or the neighbors knocking down the population. In any event, they are hitting my corn and buck forage oats the most.
QDMAworks4me
The bucks were in the standing corn the most this year. We planted 5 acres just for the deer this year. We also planted Whitetail institute winter greens which I would say was there second favorite. We also have 100 acres of alfalfa which they were in a lot during the summerand we also have some clover that the deer were in on a regular basis. Seceret spot was a success also. Sam16
I'll tell you what they werent hitting... My brassica/turnip mix that i was so excited to hunt over. They loved the corn until it was picked clean by mid november. They then moved onto the 20 acres of alfa alfa we always have planted by a local farmer. Going to try and plant some different stuff this spring by my stands though.

I had hardly any deer touch my plots the first time i planted it, now they mow it down to the ground and i consistently see them in there til the very late winter. I think the deer start to eat it when it is bitter tasting and then never touch it until that frost hits it. I have also noticed that deer are kind of hesitant about eating something new to them or even walking thru it . I planted brassicas down a path that was near one of my stands that deer would always walk down, after that the deer wouldn't even step on that path. Deer's taste buds are different all over but i would give it one more try.
Sam16
Yeah thats sorta how they acted, like they were very hesitant of the turnips. I had one doe come into my little plot, walk around the edges and eat the grasses around it. I was so mad at her i almost smoked her just cause she was ungrateful of my hard work in the summer, haha. We might try it again this year... We'll see what kind of tilling capabilities we have, AKA how much the farmer helps us out.
slughunter
we got some standing corn and a small feild of standing soybeans. The deer seem to be concentrated on those areas. not really touching the alfalfa, brassica, or clover plots we have planted around the farm. -shane
Guest WY Hunter
From what ive seen they hit leafy stuff like alfalfa and soybeans (my favorite) in the early season, but later when things get cold they tend to hit the grain crops, corn and most importantly soybeans because of the high nutrient content. kidd
They fed on the clover/chicory mix (clover plus) tehn moved to the sorghum and to the brassicas. (which i mixed with BFO) It was fun to see the rotation.
wildthing
I planted Tecomate clover this past year over about 2 acres. Deer were all over it all season...tons of film. The cool part is not that there is some snow on the ground...I can see all the new trails leading from the ridges down to the clover plots. Pretty cool. I plan on planting more clover this year. It seems as though it is hard to mess up planting a high protein, good quality clover...especially because I am not a farmer and lack all the big farming equipment.
