Welcome to the forums. Really to answer your question it depends on what you have in mind as a target. For deer and even yotes, a .270 would be a good choice, so would a .308, or a .30-06. Personally I would probably stay with one of those due to ammo availability and affordability. Could possibly drop down to a .25-06, have heard of some using .243's for shooting distances around 300 on deer, but that is getting close to pushing it.

You could go into something like a .280 or even a magnum round too, but in getting into those it is a good idea to know how much ammo is going to run and having a place you can find it when you need it. If you reload, that may not be an issue to you.

Scopes, you might hear many answers, it really depends on what you want to spend. A good scope for the money is the nikon monarch. For a while they had their old line clearanced out at natchez in 3-9X40 for $199. Dont know if there are still any deals like that around or not, but that is what I am currently using on my rifle.

I second that!

IMHO......For shots at deer limited to 300 yards, pick whatever modern round (I'd stay .25 caliber or above) you desire. Naturally, the flatter shooting, the better. But 300 yards is really not all that far for any of them.

As far as a scope goes.........you'd be best served with the best variable you can afford with a top magnification of at least 7x. Burris, Nikon, Leupold and Weaver all all names I'd look at.

so basically what your saying is the biger the better

No. I don't believe I said that at all.......at least not in this post. what I was getting at above is that any modern round capable of retaining sufficient energy at 300 yards should do a fine job for you. I'd start with a .250 Savage or .257 Roberts on the lower end and anything larger would be ducky.

i was looking at a 300. weatherby mag.

Definitely an adequate choice.

If you are buying your first gun ever, and plan on going deer hunting, I wouldn't make my first gun a .300 weatherby mag. Great gun, but if your not use to shooting, I would say it's a little much. Have a look at a .270, .308 or 30-06. These are all great calibres and will suite you well for the rest of your life. Put a .300 mag on your list of things to buy before your 25th birthday but dont' start there. For a scope, purchase the best scope within your budget.

My suggestion...a .308 bolt action with a Bushnell 3200 3X9 scope. Great gun, good scope. You will have it for years. If you want to spend a little more for a scope, the Nikon Monarch is a great scope as are the scopes in this price range from all the name brand manufactures.

Good luck, hunt safe and have fun!

If I didn't have a single deer gun and could get anything, I would get a Rem. 700 in 270 and put a Nikon Monarch on it.

If money was an issue I would get an NEF/H&R single shot 270 and put a Nikon Pro-Staf on it.

I've got several deer guns, but consider the 270 the best all around caliber. It's got great ballistics and manageable recoil.

Kind of like this one maybe:rolleyes::D. Overlook those weaver scope mounts, they were changed out fairly shortly after this pic was taken to see through rings and leupold bases.

Everybody has a favorite, and good points can be found with all. And the cartridge is more a "personal thing", as most will kill well if you do your part.

I like single shots for some reason,,maybe it just the simplicity of them.

The TC Encore bug has bitten me hard. Old pic needs to be updated,it's missing a few new additions:D

But what is pictued will handle any situation from groundsquirrels to brown bear.

Versiatilty allows me to change when the need or whim arises;)

make the first shot count
