Southerngirl
I was talking to someone in a store over the weekend and they told me about a product you could buy online that was used to season new rifle barrels and make them more accurate and easier to clean. He said it had a cleaner you cleaned with then a product you treated the barrel with. I've tried searching on google but everything is for muzzleloaders that I can find. I would like to read more about this. Anyone know a link or have tried this before?
wtnhunt
Are you sure he was not talking about lapping the barrel? Have heard of seasoning a ml barrel, but not a rifle barrel.
Southerngirl
I hadn't heard of it either, he said it was for rifle barrels, claimed you could put alot of shots thru a barrel between cleanings with it and it made cleaning super easy too. I didn't have a pen on me at the time and I can't remember the name, but he said if I searched for it online I should be able to find it
wtnhunt
Maybe he meant breaking in the barrel Kylie? There was thread not too long back here you may want to check out http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66620
Southerngirl
no, he wasn't talking about breaking one in but a way to treat or season a barrel you using already. I dunno, sounded strange to me
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I am a modern rifle and a muzzleloader shooter. There is so much hype over seasoning a muzzleloader barrel like an iron skillet. My rifles and my muzzleloader barrels are made from quality steel not iron. I have never felt the need to season a rifle barrel whether modern or muzzy. The only concern I have is whether a barrel may have a rough edge somewhere that may need smoothing. JB Bore paste does a good job on that.
Southerngirl
the x is having alot of trouble out of a fairly new ruger .243 he got for our 9 yr old to hunt with. He wanted Roy to shoot Barnes bullets but unless the barrel is emaculatly clean they will not group worth a crap however he can shoot quite a few rounds of other bullets thru it and have them group nicely. He did the whole thing Barnes recomended to break in a new rifle and has tried a few different cleaners. He has finally decided to just give up on barnes bullets and find something else

He has finally decided to just give up on barnes bullets and find something else If the "other" bullets are the same weight as the Barnes, he needs to step down one weight size on the Barnes he is shooting. The reason for this is the solid copper bullets are longer bullets than the same weight lead/copper bullets. Sounds like the barrel doesn't have the right twist for the longer Barnes. Guest onesonek
I am a modern rifle and a muzzleloader shooter. JB Bore paste does a good job on that. I agree with this,,,,,,If the rifle is a tad rough the JB will help. I haven't heard of any product of what you speak. I do have a couple barrel that took more conditioning/breaking in than most. With the JB treament, after every break-in session, things improved. Once the gun is totally cleaned, I use either Breakfree or Ezzox in the bore. These 2 products work the best for me in reducing fouling, and both work extremely well for corrosion protection. Now for the Barnes issue. They can be really fickle. Some barrels shoot them better than others, some won't shoot them at all. The JB will reduce the fouling to extend shooting beween cleanings. But if he still aint happy, then I would lap it. Dave
