Rem308
After reading the post about the Duck Hunter shooting slugs through his 870 with the 30" barrel, it got me thinking about my 870 (smooth bore). I am wondering how accurate it would be if I bought some of these slugs and hit the range...guess I need to find out. I have an 870 Express that says I can shoot 3" or 2 & 3/4 inch shells through it. It isn't a rifled barrel (I think it's 26"), it's just the standard smooth bore barrel with the screw in chokes. One question: I don't have the improved cylinder choke, I only have 2 chokes for my shotgun...I have the 'Modified' and 'Super Full'. Will the Modified work with these 'rifled slugs'? Thanks folks. Tominator
Yeah, it will work, but your slug might tumble or get a little distorted as it leaves the barrel. Personally, I'd get the IC tube, screw that in and be done with it.
lil hunter
I agree with Tominator, it will work alright, but you'd be better off buying the improved cylinder choke for it also. The best way to go would really be to buy an actual slug barrel, you could find a used one pretty cheap, or a new one would be under $150 for a smoothbore with rifle sights. It can get more expensive from there if you considered a rifled barrel and/or cantiliver scope mount.
HUNTINGMAN
I have a winchester pump with a modified barrell that I let my dad deer hunt with slugs in it one year.He shot at a deer with a saboted 3" slug and it knocked him completely off of the 4-wheeler he was hunting from[he has no legs]this was one of the funniest things i had ever seen and I could not help but to laugh after finding out he was ok.Do all slugs kick as much as this or does a rifled barrell calm the kick a bit.Have not shot many slugs and dont know if the type of slug makes a difrence. lil hunter
Huntingman, all slugs kick like that in my experience. The lightest ones you can find will kick less, and some companies(i know remington, i'm sure there's others) make reduced recoil slugs. Even with those, they can still kick like a mule, especially out of a lightweight gun.

I would buy a rifled choke tube then you will be all set to shoot rifled slugs. Go to this web site and scroll down. You can get one for $
RangerClay
Tominator is right. But if you are going to buy a choke tube I would go to the link I provided and buy a rifled tube. Now you can shoot sabots. Much more accuracy and distance. http://www.choketube.com/remington.html

MUDRUNNER
I hunted for a few years with Remington 1100 smooth bore modified barrel.I never had a problem. It shot rifled slugs fine out to about 60 yards, but that was about my limit. Not really any need to shoot 3" slugs though,2 3/4" have plenty of knockdown power.I would pick up a box of slugs and head to the range ad see how they perform for you. Rem308
This weekend I happened through the sporting goods at the local Wal Mart...they were having a big clearance sale on some ammo. I bought a few different things, paid next to nothing. I bought 2 boxes (5 in a box) of 2 3/4" Rifled slugs for 4 dollars total. I would have probably bought more, but I had already bought a few other calibers, and even though they were cheap, they did add up! I went ahead and bought them so I can go to the range sometime and see how they shoot through my shotgun.
brownie65
I have 2 Remington 870's that have screw in choke tubes. 1 is a youth 20 gauge, other one is a full sized 12 gauge. I have used modified choke tubes in these guns for several years for deer hunting. they shoot slugs great. I have also shot them both with improved cylinder tubes but the modified tubes shot better. I have a Winchester 1300 that is my main deer gun, fully rifled with scope. I really like it & use it most of the time. My boy uses one of the 870's & I use the other quite a bit when we are walking. Nothing wrong with using the modified tube, in my opinion, they shoot great for me. I would go shoot it & see how it does. If you are happy with it, then shoot it. If not then you could look into other options.
johnf
I shoot winchester riffled 2 3/4 slugs out of my nova and get about a 2" group at 75 yards with open sights. I figure I'm good out to 100. Any longer shots than that and I'll have a rifle in my hands.
LETMGROW
Remington Slugger boxes suggest Imp. Cyl. is best. I have found all slug makers vary in diameter. The Winchester foster slug measures about .010 larger than the Rem. Slugger for ex. Try some different brands and go with what works best for you. The rifled chokes aren't all that costly and really step up the slug guns performance with saboted slugs. Of course you must have a threaded barrel to accept the rifled choke. Then there is the cost, the saboted slugs are much more expensive, but in the real world how many are you going to shoot in a season? These chokes are a really cost effective alternative to a fully rifled barrel and nearly as accurate. Lynn
