VermontHunter
For such a genius as yourself Orlan,, it seems you were the ONLY one that didn't understand what it was .. Just because it's called something different in the Northeast it's wrong ... It has to be, because you say so .. :p:rolleyes:
archerjg
Yep. Roughly 12 cords a year for Grandma. She has a large outdoor wood furnace that heats the whole house and the hot water. In the summer it gets filled once a week to heat the water in the winter like now it is filled 2 to 3 times a day. Although it will take blocks 3' long and 3' in diameter so not a ton of splitting to do. Archerjg
MCH
Apparently, each region has its own word. I've heard of a cord, but never heard of a face cord. People seldom buy wood in cords around here...it's always ricks. Back when I was in the business, I could bust 10 ricks a day with a splitting maul...got pretty good at doing it one handed as well...as long as it wasn't knotty. Knew a guy down the road that could split wood without using his hands. Pretty ingenius if you ask me.
Southerngirl
it's a cord around here, which is my middle son's middle name (no we didn't name after firewood, it's a family name)

Canuck2
I have done my fair share of cutting, splitting and carrying firewood! Gave it up a long time ago and now all I do it turn up the thermostat if I need more heat or turn it down to cool the house off in the summertime! Yup, what Orlan said. wildside
. . . now all I do it turn up the thermostat if I need more heat. . . Yup, what Orlan said. Chaaaching!!!! You guys must be rolling in dough! Either that or too old to feel like dealing with the work of it all. With the woodburners, our gas bill remains virtually unchanged year-round. But, if you'd rather burn cash than wood, go ahead and turn up that dial.
elkoholic
I still cut and split the wood for our wood stove and as long as my back will let me, I shall continue to do so. I enjoy the chain saw work but the splitting is my favorite part of the process. Also, keeping the electric bill to a minimum is puts a smile on my face. wtnhunt
Sure do Lewis, but we dont burn much wood anymore. Got a few oaks down here that I need to cut up some time soon.
Canuck2
L @ wildside. Actually we used to burn about 7 or 8 cords a year - real cords, that is;) ; always used to get larch (tamarac), which is big, splits real easy, and has excellent BTU content. I also sold some from time to time. But now, instead of spending weeks in the fall cutting, loading, hauling, splitting, and stacking firewood, I go hunting. Texan_Til_I_Die
The only heat at deer camp is a wood stove. We burn mesquite since that's all there is out there in the desert. It's incredibly hot, but also burns ridiculously fast. No need to split it, the trees aren't that big.
PA_Spike_King
Yes I do cut firewood but I get a tri-axle to deliver it right to my house. And it is slab wood but that whole truck load lasts me most of the burning season. I also cut wood at our camp and bring that home.

arrow32
I've done a ton of it and have a feeling it won't stop any time soon. Real pain but in a way find it fun. Better than sitting in the house anyhow.

Grant-KS
Welp, in the morning I'll don my trusty Berne insulated overalls, Carhart coat, leather gloves and Stihl helmet system, grab my Stihl MS310 and go nuts on Hedge/bois d' arc(pronounced bodark)/Osage Orange trees cutting posts, stripping brush, and haulin' butt.
