From last summer

Never got around to posting this pic from last summer. Not the greatest pic, but thought I would share. Not too many kids ever get to hold or pet a wild baby deer. This was the fawn I hit with the tractor while raking hay last summer. The warden suggested taking some pics before he took it off.

Cool pic William, obviously the deer survived, what did the tractor hit?

Really not sure exactly where I hit it Tom. Not even sure if the warden ended up having the fawn put down or not, but think he most likely did. My wife was going to call him back, but never did. I know the front tire of the tractor hit the fawns leg as I was turning at the edge of the field where the woods meet and one of the back legs was broken. The fawn had no tone in its back and could not stand up. It could move its front legs, but could not stand up at all. The warden suggested that it probably was paralyzed possibly by some kind of midges and that was why it layed there and did not ever try to get up.

That's cool! Not being negative, but the deer was probably put down. Once you've touched it, the mother won't have anything to do with it (contaminated with your scent). My uncle has people bring them to him all the time. He had one that was only a few days old once. The guy said he found it in some bushes beside his driveway and "the mother was nowhere in sight". crazy.gif Unless they found someone to raise the deer or a farm that would take it, there is little hope for survival.

wow, that would have been cool to hold a baby deer. thats a cute little fella eh!! smile.gif wow, i bet your kids loved it, and i agree lol. they probably would have wanted to keep it. i know i would have even wanted to keep the little guygrin.gif , until he was old enough to fend for himself. i dont know if that is illegal or not

It was either leave it for the coyotes and buzzards to eat or bring it back and let the warden deal with it. I tried calling our vet to have him check it and put it down if need be, but he said to take it back where I hit it and let nature take its course. This fawn aside from the broken hind leg I caused it had something wrong with its back.

As far as the wife and kids wanting to try to keep it, they sure would have liked to, but pretty sure it is illegal in this state to posses wildlife and we did the right thing calling the warden.
