PotashRLS
Cabin fever is officially set in and I'm dreaming about a new Turkey Gun. My brother bought Mossberg's 835 Tactical Turkey Swatter last year and I love it. I am getting one but can't find a good definition of the difference between the 835 and the 535. I also wanted to know if their overbored barrels still allow the use of buckshot? Does any one know? That would double as a killer coyote brush gun. By brother's gun is an absolute Howitzer:eek:. A turkey literally doesn't stand a chance inside 50 yards!!!!!!
LifeNRA
Go with the 835, I don't think the 535 is back-bored like the 835. I have the 835, between the two, always get the better gun. JMO! Here is some info from Mossberg's web site. They say the 835 is over-bored to ten gage dimensions, where the 535 is not. I believe you will get better patterns with the 835 because of this. Each and every component of the 835® was designed and tested around the demanding requirements of high-power 3 1/2" 12 gauge magnum ammo. Unlike other new-comers to this specialized market, who just modified their existing 2 3/4" - 3" shotguns, the 835® was designed to stay the course. The robust bolt, receiver, and other components are specifically sized for the longer shells and the downrange punishment they dish out. In addition, all 835® Ulti-Mag® smooth bore barrels are overbored to 10 gauge bore dimensions, reducing recoil and producing exceptionally uniform patterns from both light and heavy shot charges. Working in tandem with the performance-enhancing overbored barrels, strategic placement of eight ports on each side of the 835® barrel direct gasses upward and outward to not only reduce felt recoil, but to minimize muzzle jump for quick second shot recovery. The new 535 ATS™ marks a new era for Mossberg® pump action shotguns. Influenced by the success of the 3" chambered 500® and the 3-1/2" chambered 835®, this shotgun brings the best attributes of both models, delivering outstanding versatility without compromising on performance. The 535's "All Terrain" flexibility is best appreciated in the field. It's chambered to handle 12 gauge, 2 3/4", 3", and even 3 1/2" magnum loads, for maximum stopping power. The Uni-line™ receiver design assists in fast target acquisition. With the Trophy Slugster™ cantilevered scope mount system, barrels can be swapped without disturbing a well-sighted scope. The sleek barrel profile, coupled with a shortened magazine tube, provides a comfortable balance and swing. A wide range of stock and barrel configurations are also available. How's that for versatile? Rugged and reliable, the 535 ATS™ is the ultimate, all-around pump gun, loaded with features usually found on shotguns costing much more, all built into a lightweight design that's easy to carry into the field. That's good, when you figure all you'll be carrying out. The 535 ATS™ is offered in a complete line of field, turkey, waterfowl, Slugster® and combo models. Chrud
I would go with the 835. The overbored barrel on the 835 is really nice.
deerslayer06
I have 535 and i have fallen in LOVE with it. I wouldnt buy anything else. No need to spend the extra money when the 535 has all the same features as the 835. may not look as pretty but I have never had a problem with my 535 or missed a shot...KNOCK ON WOOD lol. kody
if you are going to shoot #4 buck trough it use a modified choke good out to about 80 yards.
Dakota
I would definitely recommend the 835, I just bought one with fiberoptic sights and a Tru Glo red dot scope a few months ago and just tried out my turkey loads yesterday. At 40yrds I got over 20 pellets in the kill zone on the H.S. Strut turkey target shooting Federal Premium Mag-Shok 12 ga. 3.5" 2.25oz. #6s w/ flight control wad through an Ulti-full choke! That is more than enough to put a longbeard on the ground! Dakota Edited April 7, 2009 by Dakota
