Guest tarheel2
I am going on an elk hunt in Sept 2008. The area we are hunting had a wildfire burn through last year which burned most of the grass. The people who hunted this past fall had to get up into the mountains above the burned grass to find elk. Is it reasonable to believe that the grass will restore itself to the liking of the elk this spring and summer, or does grass take more than one year to recover? Dubie
If its burned early enough, grass can recover in the same season. You should be fine by summer time.
VermontHunter
I would say a burn off would bring in even better grazing the next season ..
silvertip_co
My Durango friend took a ton of elk off Missionary Ridge beginning the year after the big fire there.
Guest tarheel2
Thanks for the feedback. The outfitter offered us the opportunity to go elsewhere if we were not physically prepared to hit the high country. Going into the high country is not a problem for us. I think he is just covering the all the bases. I too thought the grass should be back and maybe even better. However, I must admit I have no experience hunting previously burned areas. Thanks
stevebeilgard
the indians used to set forest fires, and that is where they hunted the next year. fires are good. if you've ever watched a fire, then you know that the fire puts nitrogen into the soil, cleanses it, and crops grow greener right after the fire. greener equals sweeter to the game. so, you got lucky! always hunt the burn
