MCH
If you've never been to a Mardi Gras parade, I recommend going. Saturday was an experience my family will remember for a lifetime. We spent the better part of the day in Shreveport, Louisiana, parked up on the side of a four-lane highway, grilling and visiting with friends. Basically, our friend's mother, showed up Saturday morning at 6 a.m. and sat in line, waiting for the cops to open the freeway up. Then like the Sooners did during the first land rush, she drove like crazy to her desired roadside, hopped out and staked out her ground. The area was already staked off, all she did was flag it off so everyone would know it was taken. Anyway, a convoy of us Okies showed up at 1:30 and broke out the grill and the drinks. We sat on the road side watching traffic go by, throwing the occasional football and eating when we felt like it. At 3:30, they closed the road off and the kids were able to skate, run or play in the roads while the adults crossed over to the median to set up their chairs. At 4:30, the parade started. Not sure how many floats there were in the parade, but it was more than enough. Beads, plastic cups, toys and coins were tossed out to anyone with a set of lungs. When the action was over, we had amassed two garbage sacks full. Although, we dressed a little too light for the weather(was supposed to be near 60 but barely broke 40), all the talk on the ride home was about how we were going to come more prepared next year. If you ever get a chance to go to a Krewe Parade, do it. It's an experience I will never forget. BTW--I took pictures but my sister has the camera. Will try to get them uploaded later this week. wtnhunt
Never been to a mardi gras parade, but did live in Bossier city for a few months back in 1993, and it was this time of the year. I remember co workers missing work. Like Steve, I try my best to avoid crowds.
