FlGirl
Four members of my family, myself included, own 1/4 acre of land that we built a cabin on. This land borders a large private hunt club that we are members of. We were advised that for liability issues we should create a corporation and put ownership of this property into the corportaion name. This would eliminate any of us being personally liable if someone were injured on our property. We had the corportaion formed and when we received all the paperwork there's stuff in here for tax ID #'s, tax exempt application, entity classifiaction election. Anybody ever done this or have any clue what all of this I need to do? I am totally lost and confused.
OJR
I think in your case, you should contact an attorney to draw up the papers. It might cost you a few $$$$$ now, but in the long run it would be worth it!
Tominator
You might want to shoot a PM to Norm Sauceman. Norm set up his own tax exempt charitable foundation a few years ago. Norm has had a rough go of it lately with his injury and subsequent surgeries, but I'm sure Norm would help out in any way he can.
WHISKEYSWAMP
Three buddies and I own a camp in the UP, MI... we've been talking about putting it into a LLC for the same reasons but haven't yet. It is definitely a good idea and I need to get on them about it... fortunately one of them is an attorney.

Kinda what I was thinking.. 1/4 acres is what 35 yards by 35 yards....by the time you put a cabin on it and park a truck or two....no room will be left...
BowJoe
I don't know what the laws are in Florida but here in Illinois, if you give someone permission to hunt on your property and they die or get seriously injured while engaging in an outdoor activity, you cannot be sued. The law is in place to further private landowners allowing others to hunt on their property. So far, it has worked for me on several occasions. I have several friends with property that were worried about me getting injured and I simply had the section of law printed up and gave it to them to show proof that I could be trusted. Check to see if you even need protection.

It's always possible for someone to wander onto that property and get hurt. I think they're just wanting some C.Y.A. insurance.
JimPic
Not sure about Fla.,but Pa. has safety zone laws that state you cannot hunt within a certain distance of any building without the owners consent
Hoosierbuck
Think twice before you shell out money for this. Are there any landowner liability statutes in FL? Indiana and many states have them. Do you often invite others to your property? If it's just for your family and you built a cabin, do you carry any insurance on the premises? I don't see why a corporation would be necessary, in truth. This website should be helpful to you: http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=153 I think you canfind the answers to your questions there. It really is set up to be moderately simple. Good luck. HB I am not licensed to practice law in Florida. This is not meant to be construed as legal advice. What was she trying to say? If it was a 1/4 Section (160 acres), I'd do what they started to, otherwise, that's a lot of red tape to park trucks and hang out on.
