Wild Game/Hunting trivia - HELP

Bow Hunter Derek

Recommended Posts

I've been put in charge of coming up with a very informal trivia contest at a wild game cook out party the weekend after this coming one. The group will consist of about 50% hunters and the rest who know little to nothing, but ar there to eat some wild game and have a good time.

So, I need help. I thought what a better resource that the creative minds on this B.B. to help me devise some questions.

I got one out of the turkey forum just now ... the snood - the thing that hangs down over a turkey's beak.

The questions all don't have to be super hard. Some hard ones would be great to stump some of the die hard hunters in the group. I want questions that everyone can laugh at each other about.

Any help would be greatly appriciated. Just post Q & A trivia in here.

Thanks all!

Re: Wild Game/Hunting trivia - HELP

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? grin.giftongue.gif

How about "Is modern day archery equipment effective enough to humanly harvest an animal?"

Of course the answer is yes - but this is mainly geared towards the non-hunters in the crowd, more of an educational question.

Re: Wild Game/Hunting trivia - HELP

1. What is the period of time between a doe's estrous cycles?

A: 100 days.

B: 60 days.

C: 28 days.

D: None of the above.

2. During winter, deer will reduce their food intake by:

A: 50 percent.

B: 40 percent.

C: 30 percent.

D: Zero percent; they will eat the same amount of food.

3. During winter, deer will reduce their movements by:

A: 50 percent.

B: 75 percent.

C: 80 percent.

D: Zero percent; they will be just as active as they are the rest of the year.

4. In winter, how much browse do deer eat per day?

A: 3 pounds.

B: 5 pounds.

C: 7 pounds.

D: None of the above.

5. Thermal currents normally move which direction in the morning:

A: Uphill.

B: Downhill.

C: Sideways across a hill.

D: All of the above.

6. Thermal currents normally move which direction in the evening:

A: Uphill.

B: Downhill.

C: Sideways across a hill.

D: All of the above.

7. A scrape that is used by several different bucks is called a:

A: Herd scrape.

B: Meeting place.

C: Community scrape.

D: None of the above.

8. The best tools to use for scouting an area before you actually go there are:

A: Topographical maps.

B: Aerial photos.

C: Television.

D: Both A and B.

9. When the rut coincides with a full moon, when is the best time to hunt?

A: Morning.

B: Midday.

C: Evening.

D: All of the above.

10. A rub that is 1 inch in diameter can be made by a:

A: 1½-year-old buck.

B: 2½-year old buck.

C: Dominant buck.

D: All of the above.

11. When using cover scent, the best to use is:

A: Pine scent.

B: Whatever matches the surrounding vegetation.

C: Old Spice.

D: Both A and B.

12. When applying estrous urines, you should:

A: Wear rubber gloves.

B: Put some on your hunting clothes.

C: Wear rubber boots.

D: Both A and C.

13. The best way to hunt on a windy day is:

A: Stand hunting.

B: Stand hunting in dense cover.

C: Still-hunting.

D: None of the above.

Key

1. C, 28 days. Knowing when and how often a doe goes through her estrous cycles will help you know when to maximize on the use of breeding scents.

2. C, 30 percent. Deer reduce their food intake during winter periods, so you need to find predominant and favored food sources during late season hunting.

3. A, 50 percent. Deer movements drop during the winter, so for late-season hunting you'll need to concentrate near feeding areas and near bedding areas.

Southern slopes are places to start.

4. C, 7 pounds. This is the amount of woody browse a deer will typically consume per day.

5. A, uphill. When setting up a treestand, you're best suited to hunt above any side-mountain deer trail or on top of a hillside.

6. B, downhill. Setting up on the lower side of a hillside deer trail or near the bottom of a mountain is best in the evenings.

7. C, community scrape. This type of scrape is often very large in size. You'll often find several smaller scrapes in one small area that appear to be one big scrape.

Sometimes they get as large as a car. It's possible to kill several bucks from the same location in a short period of time near one of these scrapes.

8. D, both A and B. By having both topo maps and aerial photos, you can not only see the terrain features in the area, but you can also see what type of vegetation is there before you even leave home.

9. D, all of the above. While midday deer activity usually increases during a full moon, it's wise to hunt all day when the rut is in full swing.

10. D, all of the above. Small bucks don't often rub on large-diameter trees, but don't dismiss the possibility of a large buck lurking the area if you're finding only smaller rubs. Big bucks will often tear up smaller trees as well.

Pay attention to rub height and how badly the tree is torn up to determine the possibility of a big buck.

11. B, whatever matches the surrounding area. While pine scent is a good cover scent to use, it's best to use a scent that is found in the area you're hunting.

It would do no good to use a pine scent in an area that has no pines.

12. D, both A and C. You should always wear rubber gloves and boots when handling attractant scents.

Re: Wild Game/Hunting trivia - HELP

ok--i'm bored watching cartoons with the kids--this is the last one--I promise grin.gif

1. Which of the following is a sure sign that you can expect the wind to swirl around your treestand location?

It is protected the direct blast of the wind

It is on a ridge top

It is located on flat land with a big ditch 100 yards downwind

The underbrush around the stand and the limbs in the tree are thin.

Answer:

(A) Anytime a stand location is protected from the wind you’re sure to have swirling every time the wind gusts even slightly.

2. Assuming you place your stand 20 feet up in a tree located on flat ground with a light, steady wind. For what distance downwind from your stand will your scent stay above a deer’s nose?

40 to 50 yards

It will dissipate before it drifts that low

Without a strong wind, scent drops straight to the ground

10 to 15 yards

Answer:

(D) It is not as far as most people think. When the wind blows hard or gusts, it is even less.

3. What direction do hill country thermal winds blow right at sunrise?

Across the slope.

They are completely still.

Down the slope.

Up the slope.

Answer:

© In the absence of a strong day wind, thermals reverse around mid-morning as the hillside or slope warms. So right at sunrise they are still going down the slope.

GENERAL STAND HUNTING KNOWLEDGE

4. Which of the following statements about hanging your stand is false?

Position the stand on the tree to reduce the chance for a shot to your right side (if right-handed).

Stands located 15 to 20 feet off the ground are high enough for most situations.

Put your stands on the side of the tree facing the trail so the tree doesn’t block your view.

Place your stand at a point on the trunk where there is plenty of cover even if it is a little lower than you would like.

Answer:

© It is often a good idea to place the stand on the back of the tree so you can use the tree for cover to keep from being seen and to rest your gun against if you are firearm hunting.

5. Which of the following will not make your treestand hunting safer?

Using a ladder stand.

Wearing a harness while climbing.

Using stout tree branches as steps whenever possible.

Climbing down to the ground before taking a nap.

Answer:

© Tree branches can break suddenly. Also, when tree branches are wet their bark becomes very slippery.

6. All the following are important elements of staying warm on a cold stand except which one?

A full stomach

Neck gator

Air-activated hand warmers

Warm boots that fit snugly

Answer:

(D) Snug boots will actually make your feet colder by slowing circulation. When hunting on a cold day, it is a good idea to loosen your bootlaces once you get on stand.

7. Which of the following statements about treestands is true?

Most climbing stands will only scale trees larger than 20 inches in diameter.

Sectioned climbing ladders won't work in areas with large forked hardwood trees.

You need to ask before using screw-in tree steps.

Home-made wooden permanent treestands made of treated lumber are the safest style.

Answer:

© Screw-in tree steps are illegal on many public lands, also many private landowners don’t allow them because of the damage they can do to trees.

8. True or False: Deer scent is roughly 25% as effective at 20° F as it is at 80° F.

Answer:

(True) Lower temperatures reduce the amount of evaporation and the volatility of the scent.

9. True or False: It is better to have too many shooting lanes than too few.

Answer:

(True) It is a mistake to set up a stand and leave blind spots where you can’t get a shot. Open up lanes in every direction even if you don’t think a buck will approach from that direction. Bucks don’t always use trails and are likely to show up where you least expect them.

STAND SELECTION STRATEGIES

10. After opening day, what is the single best time to scout the fringes of sensitive areas like high activity travel routes and bedding areas?

The first day – before other hunters educate the deer.

Never scout the fringes of sensitive areas during the season even if not doing so costs you a good stand location.

Scout while you are still-hunting any time during the first few days of the season.

During a rainstorm.

Answer:

(D) Try to avoid sensitive areas even while hunting, except under one condition: when it is raining. Rain will keep your airborne scent close to the ground and will wash away your ground scent and cover any noise you make. Deer are less likely to realize you’ve been in the area. Make sure to carry your gun as you may even surprise a nice buck that doesn’t hear you coming.

11. True or False: The middle of October, after bucks start to rub and scrape in earnest, is the best time to prepare treestand sites for November hunting.

Answer:

(False) While this isn’t a terrible time, right after the season closes is the best time. All the rut sign will still be obvious, and by fall the deer will have forgotten any impact you had with your presence.

12. Which of the following is not worth looking for when determining where to place an afternoon treestand?

Persimmon

Honeysuckle

Turnips

Brown nutsedge

Answer:

(D) Deer like all the others very much.

13. Under which of the following conditions would it be advantageous to skip the morning hunt?

When you are hunting a feeding pattern.

When you would be hunting near an agricultural field.

When hunting during the rut.

When a deer snorts at you while you’re walking to your stand.

Answer:

(A) It is very hard to get to a morning stand undetected when you are hunting the edge of a feeding area. Generally, you only ruin the spot for afternoons, when it makes more sense to hunt such spots. The answer is not D, either, because a little snorting is not going to kill your chances.

14. True or False: When approaching your stand in the darkness of morning it is fine to cross open fields because deer don't register the encounter as dangerous.

Answer:

(False) They don’t like people at any time or in any place.

15. All of the following are good treestand locations during the rut except which one?

An afternoon stand over a scrape during the peak of the rut.

A morning stand on the downwind edge of bedding area used by does during the peak of breeding.

An afternoon stand near a feeding area used by does.

An all day stand in a funnel between two blocks of cover the week before breeding starts.

Answer:

(A) Bucks stop refreshing scrapes regularly during the peak of the rut. Sitting over scrapes is not generally a great strategy at this time unless the scrape is also along a believable travel route. Early in the rut, scrape hunting works better.

DEER AND THEIR BEHAVIOR

16. True or False: Does use trails more than bucks.

Answer:

(True) Bucks, especially mature ones, tend to travel cross-country more and are likely to take the direct route from point A to point B.

17. True or False: Deer can smell human ground scent in the snow.

Answer:

(True)

18. True or False: The use of rubber boots eliminates your worries of leaving scent on the ground while walking to your stand.

Answer:

(False) Rubber boots won’t completely eliminate scent. Some scent may still be pushed out of the boot as you walk or brushed onto low vegetation by your pant legs.

19. Under ideal conditions - steady wind, moderate to high humidity, average temperature - how far away can a deer smell a person that has made no special effort to conceal his scent?

Half-mile

One mile

200 yards

Two miles

Answer:

(A) This from estimates by experts. In my experience, it is at least 1/4 mile.

20. When a buck walks away from your stand with his hair puffed out, what did you most likely just do?

Rattle antlers.

Let him catch your scent.

Make him curious with an unusual sound.

Shoot him in a non-vital location.

Answer:

(A) Puffing up his hair is a sign of aggression. Bucks will often respond to rattling and grunting in this manner.

21. True or False: A deer’s eyes are designed primarily to detect motion. Motionless objects are rarely recognized and are often completely overlooked, even at close range.

Answer:

(True)

22. What is the total vision range of a deer including peripheral vision?

180 degrees, everything straight out from the sides of their heads and forward. Includes 90 degrees of binocular vision in the center.

310 degrees, including 50 degrees of binocular overlap in the center.

360 degrees, because their eyes are on the sides of their heads they don’t have a blind spot, with 40 degrees of binocular overlap in the center.

90 degrees right in front, all binocular overlap.

Answer:

(B) They do have a blind spot straight behind their heads. When you see an alert deer walk away with it’s ears back it is both listening behind itself and trying to get the ears out of the way so it can see backwards better.

23. True or false: A deer can smell you as well when the air is very cold as it can when the air is warmer.

Answer:

(False) When it gets very cold the normally dry air causes the inside of the deer’s nose to dry up and scent molecules don’t stick as easily.

24. Which of the following statements about mature bucks is true?

During the day, these bucks will only walk into the wind.

If you find a big scrape you know it was made by a mature buck.

The farm you have permission to hunt has the most to do with your chances for success.

Mature bucks move as much as younger bucks, there just aren’t as many of them.

Answer:

© Unfortunately, access is everything. You won’t shoot a mature buck where there isn’t one.

25. What is happening when a buck curls his lips and arches his neck?

He is reacting to a repulsive odor.

He is communicating dominance to other deer in the herd.

He is breathing in through his mouth – something deer don’t do naturally.

He is concentrating the scent of doe urine at the entrance of his nostrils.

Answer:

(D) This is one way bucks can determine the estrous status of a doe that has just urinated. The behavior is called phlemoning.
