I am looking for a place to hunt rios on public land, nothing wrong with guided private land hunts, they are just not my thing. I live in wyoming and have already gotten my eastern and my merriams. I am thinking oregon, any advice would be appreciated.

Do you hunt on public land here in OK, turkeynutz64?

I've hunted a bit on Heyburn WMA but only seen hens. Been thinking about heading out west to Black Kettle Nat Grassland and a WMA near it, but have yet to do it. Maybe this should be the year! :)

I have a little but wounldnt waste time a kettle, go to packsaddle. You will get more opps. And try keystone wma just off hwy 51 and the cimmaron river. North side! Have you been to the hwy48 side of heyburn wma yet? I have seen birds over there before! Or even try canton wma! If you take hwy 51 west you will pass it on your way to packsaddle! I do most my public land hunten in Kansas and Nebraska though! Where you from?

Thanks for all the suggestions, turkeynutz.

I hunted some just northwest of Heyburn Lake and also about a half-mile west of it where two county roads cross last year. Only managed a couple of days out there, but I did see hens on both outings. The only gobbling I heard, however, was from a penned up domestic bird south of the WMA. :(

How close to hwy 48 did you hunt at Heyburn? East or west of it?

I'd love to try out Canton and Packsaddle...think I'll do some research on them. Any suggestions for campsites or other local info for one or both?

BTW I live on the Tulsa area. I've mostly hunted on land owned by other family members in southeast OK, Eastern turkey territory, but I did start looking for OK Rio spots last year and hope to expand the search, and back a big public land Rio, this spring.
