Arguing about safety

Right now my 15 yr old son doesn't like me very much. I got him a "Rip Stick" for Christmas. ( 2 wheeled skate board) But I won't let him ride it unless he puts on his helmet. Of course he sees no danger in anything and swears that everyone will make fun of him and his reputation will be "ruined". However.....he's watched countless episodes of "Scarred" to know what happens to all those guys who do NOT wear helmets and crack their skulls open on national tv. Each and every one of them say that next time they will wear a helmet.

I can't convince my son that being able to walk and not be in a wheel chair or have permanent brain damage is important.

I must be stupid.......

My suggestion might be to remedy the situation is to trick him and put him on the winning side. Buy him a helmet that is cool off the shelf, or pick out a plain one and take it to a freelance artist and have them airbrush his helmet to his liking. His friends will say that its cool, and maybe they will start wearing one also.

Here in New Jersey, it is state law to wear a helmet for such activities. My kids have to wear one even with training wheels.

He has a plain black helmet that he adorned with stickers. It's just the idea of having to wear one at all that bothers him. And yes, Florida law requires he wears one. Sometimes you just can't tell a teen anything.....

Now I agree that helmets are important, and they prevent many injuries every year. However, I'd feel wrong trying to force it when I've never wore a helmet for my bike, ever in my entire life even to this day, and only when I was about to do something crazy on my skateboard...

However, keep in mind that the slightest infraction to the helmet rule can result in said Zip Stick winding up as kindling. I had maybe one or two of my toys taken away for good before smartening up quick.

My son has skateboarded for about 10 years now!He wears a helmet in comps. but they dont keep em on while goofen around! when you aint watchen their off! The kids are like we were, invencable!! Til they get enough pain to make em realize, it is pointless to them! I watched him compete in a lot of comps. and seen him do tricks that make me hurt! But he has learned that his days are numbered for it! He has blown out both knees and wrecked his ankles not to mention broke a leg and a arm!
