007hunter
I have no experience with steel cases so I looked it up. Found this and thought it was interesting. Steel cases "Despite popular misconception, steel-cased ammunition does not increase wear on the chamber or extractor of firearms. This is because the steel used in cartridge cases is mild steel which is very soft in comparison to the type of steel used in firearm components. The only disadvantage to using steel cases is that steel is not as "elastic" as brass, and therefore does not create such an efficient gas seal when a fire-arm is fired. It is no coincidence that small arms ammunition has been using brass cartridge cases for over 120 years." This also came from wikipedia so take it for what its worth. Doc
probably this is a stupid question, but wouldn't you think that rust might be a problem with steel cases after a while? Or are they using some miracle finish over top of the steel or maybe it is some form of stainless steel? Tarnish on brass is bad enough, but at least it is not something that pits and flakes and seriously erodes the structure of the case. What's their secret? Doc There is a lacquered finish on the casing as a preventative if I am not mistaken. Only problem I have really ever had with using any of it has been that some does not cycle right in semi auto's think this kind of explains the reason for that. Leo
His rifle might hate it or love it. I don't know. Even "good" ammo shoots like crap in some rifles. The opposite is also true, sometimes the cheap stuff is outstanding, but he is going to have to discover that for himself. There's no shortcut I know of. He should try a box of it before he commits to a big lot of the stuff. Taking ammo your rifle doesn't like on trip is a crying shame. The Wolf ammo IS the cheap stuff. I understand the attraction. If it works for him, cool. If not, only he can decide.
bluelund79
I got my wife some of it to shoot through the Rossi I bought her. I put a crappy Tasco Pronghorn 3x9x40 on it. She was shooting 1" or less groups at 50 yards from sand bags. Mind you, she is small framed, and has zero shooting experience. I though that was quite well for a gun that came w/2 barrels and a scope for less than $150 new. I didn't move her out past 50 so she can get some shooting confidence, but I would have to say that your friend should get some test boxes to see if his rifle likes to shoot it. I know that when I have to start going to the range to break in my 3 new rifles, I am going to buy her a case and bring her along! Good luck on your hunt... Adjam5
I have shot a lot of the Wolf steel cased stuff, In both .223 and 7.62x39. A bargain for sure compared to brass cased ammo. My Bushmaster AR shot the 55gr FMJ load decently. No malfunctions of any kind with the AR. What I did have happen was in the pre ban AKM I own. The extractor pulled the shoulder off the case and I was stuck with a cartridge wall in the chamber. The gun was useless until I picked up a broken shell extractor. It is shaped like a shell, but it is a collet made to expand within the chamber and remove the broken wall of the cartridge. This happened on 3 occasions and I still have the broken shell pieces I extracted. If you are going to shoot the steel cased ammo, make sure you have a broken shell extractor for the caliber your shooting. This place sells them. www.cheaperthandirt.com
