rhine16
Went home from school yesterday to hunt the last day of deer season. Was planning on bow hunting, but it just wasnt gonna work. It started raining about 9 am and wasnt suppose to stop til after dark, so i headed to my main farm and picked up my uncles 45-70(legal in MS primitive season) around 12:30. Once i got the gun and my clothes on, i headed behind his house to an 80 acre block of pines. In a steady downpour and even a little sleet a couple times, i did a 2 hour stalk hunt throughout the pines. I never saw a deer, but there is no telling how many i jumped but couldnt see or hear because of the rain. From there, i headed to my other farm(about 10 minute drive). Once there, i ate lunch with my grandad and tried to figure out how i would finish my season. I had planned to hunt on his farm since we dont manage it as serious, but I didnt really want to sit out in the rain for a couple of hours. So, at about 3:15 i went out on his place and tried to jump deer. I didnt see a thing. At about 4:30, i decided to head back to my other farm and just watch a field to end my season. I got setup in my shooting house around 5, and the rain finally stopped to just a light drizzle. My feelings changed from no hope to a slight chance. Nothing showed until 5:30, when i saw 4 does coming across a 300 yard pasture toward the field(they weren't suppose to be coming from there ). They made it to the field around 5:40. About the time they jumped the fence, i looked to my left to see a herd of deer that had just appeared over the hill. I threw up my gun to see what all it was, but my scope had fogged up and i couldn't really tell. Somehow, one of those deer caught me moving in there and they took off. I know for sure that there were 7, maybe 8. Not long after they left, 2 came out directly in front of me. Both were does. I considered shooting, but they too suspected something was up and took off back into the woods . So here i was thinking my season was over, and i look back to where the 4 originally were, and they're making their way toward me. I decided to pick the biggest out and pull the trigger. Checked my phone for the time, i still had three minutes until shooting time was over. Cleaned my scope out best i could, and got the gun back up. I picked one out, and delivered my shot. The doe jumped about 10 feet in the air:D:rolleyes:, and took off into the woods. To make a long story short, she went about 50 yards from where i shot her and piled up. She was the first deer i've killed with a gun since December 21, 2005, and only the second doe i've ever killed with a gun. Pictures were bad, cause by the time i got the camera my grandad and already put her on the rack . Oh well I guess i'll go ahead and make a season's end post out of this too. My season ended with me just killing two does- One with bow and that one. Second consecutive year i've not killed a buck. Wasnt like i didnt get the chance though. I missed a 5 point, a 6 point, and a very likely pope and young 8 point with my bow . My shooting has got to improve, to say the least. The first two i can blame on having to shoot my old bow, but I just plain missed the 8(though he was on alert). With the gun, i passed up 2 bucks that i would say would've gone in the 120's. They'll be bigger next year though Overall, we didnt kill but two bucks. Both pretty decent. One going 122'', the other in the 110 range. Neither were bad MS bucks. I also had the priviledge of being the guide on both my girlfriend's and my youngest brothers first deer. Those were without a doubt the highlights of my season. This was my girlfriends first year to hunt, and she accompanied me numerous times. Pretty sure she will want to go again next year;). I'll end this post with all of our kills. Sorry it was so long. My October 13th doe Andrew's 122inch youth weekend buck Krista's doe- Thanksgiving Jon Reuben's spike-11/23 Mark's(my uncle) 8 point- 1/25 Once again, sorry for such a long post.
