I'am trying to decide of a rifle and shotgun for my wife, and I think I'am going to go with a single shot as well. I think I'am going to buy a youth H&R 243 then send the receiver and stocks back to H&R and have a 20ga barrel fit to it. H&R has a good program for this just be careful which one you buy. The rifles (SB2) can be fitted with a shotgun barrel, but the Shotguns (SB1) can not be fitted with a rifle barrel. That way a end up with a combo 243 and 20ga in the same stock. As my son gets older he will be able to use the same combo as well.

Here is a link to the program:D http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.aspx

I would go with a pump or even a autoloader before a single shot. THe recoil is least with the autoloader, slightly more with pump and worst with the single shot.

My gauge of choice was 20. In fact the boys still are using their Reminton youth express shotguns at 17 and 16 years old.(I got them 6 years ago)

I went with a singleshot 20 for my daughter "14" and she loved it so much I started hunting with one myself! I sold off my last 12g. this fall! It was hard but my shoulders just couldnt take it anymore anyway! I had a custom singleshot 12g. 28"barrel 3 1/2" with a xxfull choke tube installed! It was a butt kicker and the bud that I let buy it is wishen now I would have kept it! lol I took him out to shoot it after he forked over the money! He pulled the trigger one time and was getten up off the ground shaken his head, he hasnt shot it sense!!
