dartonman
My 14 year old son runs a paper route, and hordes his funds....we as parents will meet him halfway on his newest quest for his studies as a freshman, and his gaming addictions............he wants a laptop that is user friendly, and with warranty....he needs speed for gaming....he is extremely intelligent, and wants to spend his money wisely.....we were studying the HP computers, along with Dell......we will go probably up to around 750.00 if needed.....what do we buy that will last, and not be outdated and obsolete.....he will want internet capabilities.....................al
johnf
I've had 2 laptops and wouldn't buy another for anything. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but what good is a warranty if the piece of is in the shop all the time. We had 2 in 3 years and probably had a total of 7-8 months of good use out of both combined. I'm on my 3rd desktop since 1997 and just got this one in July. You can get a better desktop for less money.
preacherman
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Bought it the middle of last year. It is fast enough for what I need. This is my third Dell laptop and I have (knock on wood) not any trouble with anyone that I have had. I know that everything is human made and some things will break; but I have had no trouble out of these.

Bowtech_archer07
I've got a Dell Latitude D820 and haven't had any problems with it. Dell makes great laptops for reasonable prices. Mine is no longer made, but newer ones in the same or similar series are made and they are great laptops.

M00N
I highly recommend going with a Dell laptop. We've gone through several laptops over the years here in this house. By far all the Dell ones we currently own have lasted the longest and we've been the most happy with them and their customer service. From our experience two of the worst laptops I've ever owned came from Toshiba and Alienware. HP and Sony laptops are nice, but if you're looking for a more gaming geared laptop you're better off going with Dell, as these two companies don't focus as much on gaming setups with their laptops as Dell does. I also recommend whatever laptop you buy get a good warrenty. Accidents happen and laptops are quite easy to drop and break, especially when in the hands of teenagers who might have friends playing on their laptops. As far as buying something that won't be obsolete in a few years, that's impossible to do in the computer industry. From the moment any computer is bought it's technically already obsolete because the technology just advances that fast. No matter what company claims to be ahead of the game with their computers, they won't be for very long. You'll drive yourself insane if you attempt to keep up with the technology. However, the gaming industry is a little slower and a good high end gaming laptop should keep you able to play the newer games for a few years. Just make sure you get at least 1GB of RAM and a 512MB graphics card in the laptop and you should be good to go for gaming for a couple years.
