Swamphunter
What is a decent priced shock collar for a dog (not bark collar), and where can I find one? Something that will preferrably work on my wife and children also....thanks
Tominator
I'm going to move this to the equipment room Ken, might get more views there. I know Cabelas carries a few. Pretty sure someone was selling one in the classifieds too, you might want to check that room out.

Swamphunter
LOL........I am having a hard time taking this serious. No...its serious. I don't want anything that will kill the dog...but something that comes real close would be good. Seems my wife's dog has taken a liking to eating off our table when no one is looking. I mean shove her dang head right into your plate and take something. We have tried scolding, water bottle spray...everything. We have used a shock collar in the past, and got excellent results. We had borrowed it from a friend who has since moved away. We would like to invest in one before this gets WAY out of hand. Thanks

dartonman
Collar I believe there still is one for sale in the classifieds, under "a few items for sale"....Ill try and locate it.......you want to stick with something to the effect of tri tronics......they are superb collars, ebay is not a bad place to locate a good used one....get one with multiple settings, and warning tones...they work the best.....and some will come with a "dummy" extra collar......which is hilarious.....Ill tell you why...my dog, when younger, was a terror to train, and obey...when I had to, she got the voltage....when not in training....she would wear the dummy collar, when she had a bad thought, she would "shake" like she was going to get shocked for even thinking about running off............they work....al
wtnhunt
We have never used a shock collar Ken, but did get one of the innotek bark collars from cabelas, and it works really well. Have had it for probably 3 years now. Think it needs a new battery now though.
dartonman
Ken...its still for sale....by Mudrunner......I put it in the top of the classifieds for you for easy findings.....lol....ps, dont leave the collar on too tight, too long....the prongs will damage the dogs hide......and get infected............al

Funny story, I may regret posting. When we got the new bark collar for the dog, my wife questioned whether the collar would really work ok or not, and you guessed it, she tried it out:eek:. All she could say about it was yep, it works:D. When asked if she needed to try it out again, she said nope:rolleyes:.
jm23494
I'll second the motion for Tri Tronics. My lab wears her's everytime we are out in the field as well as when we go to the park for walks. She is a typical gun dog and loves the water. Through repeated trips swimming the shock collar has held up great. A fully charged battery lasts up do about 36 hours depending on how much it gets used. Just make sure that when you get one that it has the audible warning option I made the mistake and wish that I had spent the few extra bucks and got one with the audible. NiteRunner
Definitely go for Tri-Tronics, Great Company! My dad has an older model 1-dog system from them, still works good!
birdhunter39
i know what your talkin about swamphunter , my sisters blk lab pup ( 6 months old ) will try and sometimes does grabs food off the counter , stove , table , etc. we have a training collar for the other lab ,i"m thinkin on puttin it on the pup and putting the zapper at full strength ( 8 ) that makes me jump , so i know how it will feel , then i thought about fillin a spray bottle with water and squirtin him the same time i zap him . hopefully he"ll learn real quick .good luck with your dog
jm23494
You have to be careful when using a shock collar as a discipline. Don't just zap the dog when they do something bad, tell them no first and then if they do the same thing wrong again then you can zap them. Usually it doesn't take too high of a setting to get the point across. Usually my lab will get the point at a setting of 1. Just passing along my experienes whether they are right or wrong. dogdoc
tri-tronics is top of the line but if you are just wanting it to clean up some obedience around the house you don't need a top of the line collar which is going to cost you hundred mores then a cheaper basic model. Now if you have a hunting dog and going to be doing field and water work the higher end collar is the way to go. I honestly think you will be fine getting a lower model dogtra or SportDog collar for what you want. You should be able to pick a lower end collar up for around a hundred bucks. woodshed
Tritronics Sport at Cabelas for 239.00 was what my dog trainer recommeded to me. Water proof, warranty, 1/2 mile range. It works great and you only need it on 1 or 2 out of 10. It feels like a static shock and is all the dog needs to react immediately. No pain. My trainer said one important thing. You shouldn't use these to try and correct bad behavior. They are intended to reenforce obedience commands that the dog already knows and has been trained. (come, sit, stay, etc..) If you zap bad behavior willie nillie, the dog doesn't know what the proper reaction should be after that. It's very confusing to them and then could be considered cruel or negative training. The Tritronics comes with a video that also explains this. It's a great tool if used properly. I highly recommend them.
jm23494
I had a nice talk with the Tri Tronics rep at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor show yesterday about collars. I have a friend who has a collar that broke the outer casing and one that is not functioning properly, he was told to mail them in and they will be fixed without question. That stands words to me how they will stand up for their customers. They also showed us some of their recievers that are 20 years old and still in use. Plus they are made in America and not overseas!
