Guest buxman66
new to the forum and i'd like to throw a question out there to any and all..... is there an acceptable weight range "window" of your arrow or bolt? just got a dz. of new arrows and 1 box had a variance of 314.2gr.-317.2gr. the other box had a range from 314.2gr.-317.0gr. i remember reading in a current issue of one of the bowhunter's mag's an article written by chuck adams.....and in it he said at one point he "culls out" the shafts that vary more than 1.5gr if i remember right......most likely the weight diff is not an issue @ 10-20yds. but 30-to even 50yds. might have an issue.....correct? trying to solve as many of the equipment issues i can as invariably ole mr.murphy,(of murphy's law fame) will show his head on a 45yd shot of a lifetime.thanks in advance of any replies... Guest ohbowhntr
Not really sure about crossbows, but in all honesty, unless I'm shooting high level competition (which would never happen), I'd not get to overly worried about that small difference in weight. I have some arrows cut at 29.5 and some cut at 30", and can tell absolutely no difference in their flight out to about 60yds, but that's only a 4.5gr difference, and should only result in 1.5 FPS variance shooting a 70# bow, so I wouldn't expect much difference. As for Chuck, I like him and all, but I'm not trying to frame my equipment around his standards, and you certainly aren't either, therefore, I wouldn't get to concerned about it in all honesty. Leo
You're talking less than +/- 0.5% spread on a projected mean. If you got that on your total arrow weights, YOU ARE DOING GOOD! Frankly, some field points or broadheads have a bigger spread than that, and are just fine. I wouldn't loose any sleep over a 100gr head that actually weighed 101grs and that's 1% difference. Double what you're claiming you got for totals. Seriously, no throw aways there IMHO. You got some good stuff.
Guest buxman66
thanks go out to both of you ohiobowhunter and leo for the replies. did'nt think that it would mean much of a diff but i thought i'd ask of some of you that would know. i re-read the article....the actual magazine i'd read was bowhunters world(feb.07 issue) that i had stashed in my toolbox at work. in the article he actually said he was picky if they exceeded (+-)4 gr. so i believe i'm in the good range! thanks for the responses! hutchies
Leo is right. You also have to remember that some of those differences maybe how much or little glue you used on fletchings, inserts, every fp does not weight exactly the same and neither do most inserts. I would say you got a good batch. I worry more about spine consistancy than I do weight. A few grains is very little difference.
