not quite Steve....they have to manually fuel the generator....wires are to conveniant....

but..but...They still need wires, for the convenience of getting the power from the generator. Why are those wires OK ?

Is it just the fact that they feel, they are producing the power and not the outside world?

and if so .... who makes the generators and the wire, and the lightbulbs, etc, etc ? the Amish or the outside world ?:rolleyes:

rules are rules Steve....they feel if they have control over their generator nobody from the world is affecting them...a lot don't have generators as well...different churches allow different things, but for the most part all dress the same...

There's an amish place here in Oklahoma where they don't have a phone in the house, but there's a pay phone in their front yard. Sooooo, can they have telephones?

Ben

That is in fact the Okie Pallet company in Chouteau, Oklahoma. I drive by it every morning.

Many of the Amish have modern equipment including vans. There are a few resturaunts in Chouteau owned by Amish. All have power, phones, and transportation for the business.

In your opinion, do you think the Amish know the difference from being separated from the world in a spiritual sense, as opposed to a physical sense ?

What is the suicide rate, among the Amish ?

more so the physical appearance......dress is everything....as long as you look OK you are good to go.....suicide rate??? it's very low.....can't think of too many amish that have done that....

Another question that comes up around here, Do Amish pool their money to help other Amish buy land, build houses / barns, etc?

What about pre-arranged marriages, does that happen?

Yes they pool their money. Ive seen it on a couple of occasions. Ive literally seen them line up at a bank and make deposits one right after another into the newlyweds account.

Arranged marriage?

BTW, Im not trying to break SRA's thunder. I was raised around Amish. We have a large community less than 10 miles from me. Ive worked with several and such....

your points are great Jeramie, but a true amishman will not own a restaurant. it's probably a spin-off from the amish. there is a lumberyard around here that is Amish owned. when you call their office the people answer out of breath, because they have to run across the road to answer the phone....

They still claim to be amish. They are Yoders. They still have no power at home, etc. etc. etc....

I guess there are different levels of conviction. :D

1. Does each community have a primary leader? and if he dies do they elect another one?

We had some who lived near here and one was killed felling a tree. They all moved to Indiana.

2. One worked at a cabinet shop here and would bring his cordless drill in to charge it up. At the end of the workday he would take it home and use it. Isn't that using electricity made by someone else?

3. Several buildings around here were built by the Amish, and one thing they all have in common is that the window frames are one board butted against another. Is against their religion to cut a 45 degree angle?

....popgun
