1. Does each community have a primary leader? and if he dies do they elect another one?

We had some who lived near here and one was killed felling a tree. They all moved to Indiana....leader??...no not really.....they have leaders in the church...

2. One worked at a cabinet shop here and would bring his cordless drill in to charge it up. At the end of the workday he would take it home and use it. Isn't that using electricity made by someone else?...yes....but they're not the one sinning....

3. Several buildings around here were built by the Amish, and one thing they all have in common is that the window frames are one board butted against another. Is against their religion to cut a 45 degree angle?...no not at all.....just making things quicker for them i guess....

In our local church, they may not post there ground. Therfore a friend of mine moved 15 mi. south to be under a different church and now he is allowed to post his ground and have a hunting cabin.

In this area if a young man borrows money for the purchase of a home or buisness. The lender is not allowed to charge intrest on that loan. This would be one of the reasons properties are easier to attain by the Amish.

We have 3 different churches in our area, and I've grown up with the amish. I will say they are great friends and caring people. In spite of all the bad things written and spoken about them, I'll take a county full of amish over a bunch of city people any day.

I will also add that they pay most taxes we pay, but they don't have to pay overtime, workmans compensation. If someone is hurt on the job, the local buisness owners take care of that family.

Not sure what your fascination is with the Amish or which order you have near you, but many of your answers to others' questions are plain flat wrong. At least they are wrong in regards to true "old order" Amish. Cell pones for the kids?? Generators to run indoor conveniences?? Trips to the liquor store?? Sitting on stacks of cash?? Most have phone booths?? All wrong in regards to "old order" Amish.

the sect we have around here consider themselves "old order"....i know there are several types from new order to the old order. the older folks are trying to keep many of the old order ways but the younger generation is pushing for "newer" and better conveniances...it is true(and a couple guys on here could back me up) about the partying and cell phones...and also the money and phone "booths".....i know different areas are more "strict" on some of these rules....but all true....

What if any is the difference in Amish and Mennonites? I do know that some money comes in from farmer's markets where they sell grown goods, woodwork, quilts and other handmade items.

Amish are much more "plainer" people...Mennonites on the other hand drive cars, have TV's (not all), and dress a little more like "english" people...

Believe it or not, we have an amish poaching problem near where I hunt. They use a battery operated spotlight and shoot deer from the road. The DNR has been notified and will NOT do anything about it. Why?

i don't know Randy......they should...you need to push the issue...i don't like poachers..

Well in this area, you see both white and black. I was told that the unwed wear the white and the wed wear the black.

that makes sense.....i do notice married amish ladies with the black bonnet more....

This is a VERY interesting thread.

What is the defection rate for Amish people?........actually, it doesn't happen very much....usually after they have their fling as young people they return...

I mean how many wake up one day and say" This is not for me?"

Does that happen often?....i'm sure it does some....get this....there is an ex cheerleader from our local town of Washington that became Amish....she just got married the other week....how often does THAT happen???....she had NO Amish roots whatsoever...

I know your Gramps left the clan, know of any others?....oh, sure...

And what is the punishment for such?....usually...they practice what they call "shunning".....

Thanks

Shunning is pretty harsh. You can't even acknowledge that person is alive anymore. ( Kind of childish if you ask me)

maybe....but it's part of the Amish heritage....(one i don't agree with at all....)
