texastrophies
Found this link for a "free" hog hunt in Texas. After reading the fine print it isn't exactly free, but it isn't a bad deal either. Don't know anything about this place, so I can't help you there. The cost from what I can tell is, a Texas hunting license, $75 booking fee, $35 per animal for cleaning and $100 gratuity to guide, cooks, etc. Here is the link http://www.wildhoghunttexas.com/freehoghunt.htm?gclid=CO7R64TGtZECFQ6CPAod9i9Adg
stevebeilgard
that's pretty close to free.
Jeramie
I thought you didnt have to have a license to hunt hogs in Texas? Is that wrong? I know in both Oklahoma and Arkansas one isnt required......
texastrophies
Here is the info from TPWD. Basically it sounds like if you are a landowner or helping a landowner out because the hogs are tearing up his property a license is not needed. If you are going hunting for sport or meat it is needed. A hunting license is not required to hunt the following: Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl. Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land. Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation. Non-resident 5-Day Special Hunting (Type 157): $45 Legal for any period of 5 consecutive days (valid hunting dates will be printed on the license when issued). Valid to hunt: Exotic animals, all legal game birds (except turkeys), all nongame animals, squirrel, javelina and alligator (not valid for other game animals, NOT VALID FOR DEER). Stamp endorsement requirements apply.

Leo
Checking references and researching the place might be cheaper than a "FREE" hunt. I don't know the place. But I'd proceed with caution.
texastrophies
Checking references and researching the place might be cheaper than a "FREE" hunt. I don't know the place. But I'd proceed with caution. You should do that with any hunt or actually anything you purchase over the internet.
Guest ckcranch
My Dad went on one of those `Free Hunts' in Texas. They had 6 of them go and paid $90 each and out of all of them they only got one hog. But I did see this web for this free hog hunt and it seems like a nice deal. I have even thought about going on it.

This a volume based "put & take" operation marketing through eBay and having no interest in repeat business or positive word of mouth referrals. Very misrepresented and very disappointing” http://www.huntinfo.com/reviews/outfitter_reviews.php3?Action=Read&areview=1109172398 “Fairly long post, but wanted to give as much detail as possible in case you are considering this ranch. This is a small ranch located just East of San Antonio off I-10. We purchased a hunt (blackbuck, ram and hog) off Ebay and it was very explicit as to what was included. However, upon our arrival, we found that “ebay hunts” would be treated with much less respect. I use quotes because that is what we were called all weekend long. We were treated as more of a burden than guests, not to mention paying guests. I am including a list of highlights of the reasons I CANNOT recommend this ranch/operation: (Darin was my hunting partner, Dean was the hog hunter in camp) - Eat in cold, dark, alone o Friday night the guide nor the owner sat down to eat with us and/or carry on a conversation as we sat on the porch, with no light in the cold o Saturday night we simply requested the meal be at our trailer so we wouldn’t have to sit outside again, and again we at alone - Darin wasn’t picked up Saturday morning until after 11:00 am for his hunt, then just dropped off by himself on place he’d never been for his “100% guided ram hunt”, then told if he shot one too large he’d have to pay another $700 o On a paid hunt Darin sat in camp for half a day waiting to be taken to the other property o NEVER was there a mention of a limit on the size of ram that could be harvested, until Darin was being dropped off for his ram hunt o On a 100% guided ram hunt, shouldn’t a guide be present? - asked to leave stand o even though we had harvested our hogs, I didn’t think it appropriate to be asked to leave a stand in the area the black bucks had been seen - feeders not working o None of the feeders Darin checked on the other ranch were operational - no rams seen o We would expect to at least see a ram, maybe not harvest, but see one - only 5 BB on place that we could tell o only 5 blackbucks were ever confirmed seen by any of the hunters, including the “guide” - treated as an inconvenience o The hospitality witnessed by us and the other hunter in camp was completely lacking. That’s why Dean (the hog hunter) left Saturday night before supper and not even go on his Sunday morning hunt? o Several comments and actions over the weekend gave the impression we were in the way, rather than paying guests. - “ebay hunt” o On several occasions the mention of “on our ebay hunts…” o NEVER in any correspondence, or advertisement in the ebay adds or on the web site was there a mention that a hunt purchased on ebay would be of less value than a normally purchased hunts o We purchase items on ebay to get bargains, not to get less value. I’m sure this is the same reason anyone purchases items on ebay - Not guided as advertised o While we were provided a guide, he was spread between 3 different hunting parties leaving him only a small amount of time to dedicate to each o A guide was non-existent on the ram hunt, which was supposed to be 100% guided - No soft drinks as promised o The only drink provided was water and orange juice until later Saturday afternoon and milk was delivered o There weren’t any snacks as promised until Saturday afternoon as well - No access to 4 wheelers as advertised o In the very last email correspondence the owner mentioned that 4 wheelers would not be provided, up to that point, for the previous 10 or so correspondences over 5 months it was advertised that they would be available o This is a small issue, but just another misrepresentation - 4 wheelers from hog hunters had terrorized the place o While walking/still hunting one couldn’t help but notice the atv tracks covering the entire ranch. These were very fresh from the previous hunting party o That is the right as the land owner to allow this, but the rules state this is not to be allowed and we had expectations that the game would not be terrorized by atv’s. o It wasn’t until late Saturday that some of the animals started emerging from the thickets - No corn o Again, only in the owner’s final correspondence did it mention we would have to provide our own corn o Again, not a big issue, but in a previous conversation we were given the impression corn would be provided to bait the animals. - Friday noon to Sunday noon???? o To me that mean hunt from Friday noon to Sunday noon, not Sunday 9:00am, and certainly not “you will have to be out of camp by 11:00am - Positive: o One nice axis seen o One nice sika seen o One nice fallow seen o One nice red stag seen o LOTS of buffalo (more like cattle though if someone likes that kind of “hunt”) o Could have killed more hogs, saw several (not what I’d call a lot though) o Accommodations were acceptable, but there was a nicer trailer available we weren’t allowed to stay in (not sure if that was for guests though) o They are finishing a new building that will be nice for dining, showers, a few sleeping areas, etc. o Two tower blinds on high fence pasture are very nice If you like I can go into more detail on any point you wish. I sent this list to Paul Candelaria twice giving him the opportunity to respond, but to date have heard nothing from him. My assumption is that I’m old news now and wouldn’t be a source for future income for him. My hunting partner (Darin) had already purchased another hunt on ebay from wildhoghunt before our arrival. After our hunt, he has tried on several occasions to explain our disappointment and ask that corrections be made or refund for his future hunt. Darin was finally able to speak with Paul and he “guaranteed” his satisfaction on the next hunt. Darin followed up he conversation with and email to confirm as he wanted something in writing. Paul’s response was, “I checked with your guide from your last hunt, and he confirmed no guide fee and a poor tip. To guarantee your success on your next hunt, you will need to plan on a upfront guide fee of $75 upon arrival. The guides don't like working for free and not getting tipped, as you can imagine. You will also need to plan on $100 for meals and lodging, as per the terms of your auction.” So far this is the only explanation we have gotten from him as to our crappie service. Now let me address his response. 1st – guide fee was included in the auction price IN WRITING! 2nd – guide’s tip was to be based on service and success IN WRITING! - there was no guiding taking place - success was marginal - we tipped the “guide” $140 anyway because we found out Paul doesn’t pay him anything 3rd – Meals and lodging were included in our package IN WRITING! In conclusion, I will stop short of calling this operation fraudulent, but suffice it to say don’t expect what you are promised, even if in writing. For example, some of his advertisements boast “expect to see as many as 100 hogs.” We saw maybe 20, tops. You will see the number of hogs Paul hauls in on a cattle trailer and releases the day of your hunt. They are interested in how many hunters they can herd through, take the money and get ready for the next herd.” http://www.huntinfo.com/reviews/outfitter_reviews.php3?Action=Read&areview=1176600455 “Hunted with 6 other hunters on 3 day /2 night hunt and only took 1 piglet and a 100 pound boar by whole group. E-mailed owner after first unsuccessful day and never saw a hog til late in the second day, he never replied or offered any alternative place to hunt.” http://www.huntinfo.com/reviews/outfitter_reviews.php3?Action=Read&areview=1165251819 WARNING: This outfit is only interested in seperating you from your money. I wasn't impressed and thankfully never went on a "hunt" at his place. I've heard from several people that there is typically too many hunters on the Ranch, and have heard of some "safety issues".... I've also heard that the operation is ALL about herding folks through and making as much $$ as possible, and not much is placed on repeat customers. Really sad.... “ “Another fairly long post regarding WildHogHunt but people need to know as Ebay is only covering up for this guy. Back on October 18, 2004 my friend purchased a S. San Simeon Super Sheep Shoot, 5 sheep, choose any 2 from WildHogHunt. The purchase price was $154.50. This was a pretty cheap hunt and I was glad to get it only to find out after paying for it that my payment was being returned because I had mutually agreed to cancel the hunt (which was not true). We had to contact Ebay immediately to tell them that I had never contacted Paul Candelaria to cancel this hunt. Anyone knows that a ram hunt for two rams at that price is cheap so this is why he wanted to cancel this hunt. Anyone who has bought an item on Ebay knows that it is impossible to confuse your items but this was the excuse he used to say that he mistook me for another hunter who wanted to cancel his trip. After straightening this out I was to go on a black buck hunt and my daughter was going to do the ram hunt. The hunt was originally set for Sunday, March 6th. But on Friday, March 4th I got an email saying that they had shot all of the blackbuck and I would have to schedule for another weekend. I told Paul that I would go ahead and come down for the ram hunt and do the blackbuck later but he told me that they did not have any rams either. So the hunt got rescheduled for May. For the May hunt my daughter's boyfriend purchased an additional hog hunt and we all were going to go on the same weekend. But now the rules have changed. There seems to be a set of rules on Ebay and a set of ranch rules and then there are the rules that he makes up out of his head as he goes along. There now is a mandatory staff fee of $75 which was not on my contract or part of the Ebay listing. The price of food and lodging had also increased; again, not part of my contract. So we decided to stay in a motel in Gonzalez and bring our own food to save the money. It clearly states in the contract that exotic hunts are to be fully guided. This is a joke. All Jonathan, the guide, wanted to do was talk to his fiance who is the maid and cook. When we asked him how many blackbuck were on the ranch he didn't know. When we asked him where the blackbuck have been seen he didn't know. He never went out with us to find the blackbuck the whole time we were there. This is considered fully guided? My daughter wasn't the only one who had a ram hunt. And by day 2 people started complaining about not seeing any rams. And just like Robert Bridges posted in comes a cattle truck and low and behold rams appear. Now I've been on many ram hunts almost all of them on ebay and you know when rams have been just dropped off. These rams are nothing like the pictures shown on ebay. Paul will tell you that you can shoot a full curl ram and he'll tell you there's many species to shoot but he only buys Barbados because that is all you will ever see. Needless to say out of the two rams my daughter was supposed to get, we only got one because they only let off two and another hunter shot one. As for the hogs, they were all small so it's really hard to get "big mean hogs" when they are all under 100 lbs. And for my blackbuck, never saw one. I contacted Paul immediately after the hunt, told him that I didn't even have a shooting situation and what was the ranch policy. Paul said he would make me a deal. In his own words "none of the hunts are guaranteed, however, I will let you add another blackbuck hunt for $300; again not guaranteed." I had already paid $726 for the first blackbuck hunt. We filed a complaint with SquareTrade dealers and he never responded. In all we spent $1400 for three hunts and only came away with two animals (one ram and one hog). This is a warning to anyone wanting to go to this ranch! I have all email correspondence for anyone who would like to read it to prove my point.” “I just came across this site. I recently took a ram hunt in Texas with another outfit and was warned to stay away from this hunt provider (wildhoghunt). Some of the things the Texas guide told me were reflected in these posts. I was looking at ebay before coming here and noticed the same thing: a seller by the name of "texasbesthunting" uses the EXACT wording and content that "wildhoghunt" uses in their ad. The email address is also the same. The "texasbesthunting" seller is a new one- it has only been registered for about one week. May want to add that site to your questionable list.” “see on this site that several people have been disappointed with the hunts offered by this outfitter. When I checked the feedback section of EBAY for this seller I see a "100%" positive rating from 353 users(granted it did list 3 neutral and a few withdrawn). I was wondering if this guy has been so much of a problem, why has everyone given positives or decided NOT to post feedback. We are doing a disservice to others. I would think that as sportsmen we need to warn others if the services we receive are not acceptable. Why let a bad situation continue? I know that I have received less than favorable services before and I let people know. If it had not been for the guide saying something I would have went by the feedback scores I saw on EBAY to help me make a decision about if I wanted to use that outfitter. I don't know this guy, have not booked hunts, or even spoken to him so all I have to go by is your word here and those of his feedback.” “I tried to post feedback, but he books the hunts for enough in the future so that ebay won't allow you post feedback on an auction ending over 90 days ago. I tried notifying ebay, but they would not listen, nor would they allow me to post feedback. That is why I'm posting on sights like this.” “Hey Guys and Gals, ***BUYER BEWARE*** I was doing my nightly ebay "thing" and reviewing the bargains in the HUNTING TRIPS, LEASES area looking for that hunt that "NOBODY CAN REFUSE!!!" when I came upon an interesting offer. It was a hog hunt for two hunters offered by "ROSEMARY5031" in New York State. What got my attention was the fact that the seller just registered on 9/21/05 and had no feedback rating. Peaked my interest to say the least. Seems that the hunt was to take place in Gonzales Texas on the "CANDELARIA RANCH". Looks like old Paul has found another way to try and shake his bad reputation as WILDHOGHUNT. Might want to add that name to your "forget it" list.” http://www.texashuntfish.com/app/view/Hunt/1611/Wild-Hog-Hunt- Written by: "Wrenchmaster" Posted on deertexas.com I made the mistake of booking and paying for this so called "hunt" with wildhoghunt.com before checking; the only thing positive I can say is that I've paid more tuition for the "school of hard knocks". The whole affair was a mess, to say the least. The first thing that started alarm bells going off in my head was the fact that we were required to buy two bags of deer corn, something that should have been provided by the ranch. Then, when we were checking in, it was made very clear that a $50.00 gratuity was to be paid then. I do not tip at a restaurant before the meal and refused to pay this upfront. We were also informed of all the extra fees that would be required, such as paying $10.00 per animal that was put in their freezer, and a $35.00 per animal skinning fee. I had purchased two hunts but my partner could not get the time off; when I asked if I could take the two hogs from that hunt, Paul refused. Of course, I could take an extra hog for another $100.00. I understood forfeiting the hunt, but not being able to take the hogs which I'd already paid for was more than a little hard to swallow. Another item that was somewhat troubling was the fact that another hunter had purchased two hunts and paid for the meals and lodging. I asked if I could purchase the lodging from him, again, we were refused. Before we went out hunting, several people asked about the size of the hogs. They had been lead to believe that 400 lb. hogs were around; we soon learned that the largest we could expect would be maybe 100 lb. ones. The actual size of the hunting area was misrepresented in the website; the actual hunting area is only 300 acres, not the 2000 advertised. When you put 7 or more hunters in this small an area twice a week, you must assume that the hogs are being brought in and released (canned hunt). The website also talks of "guided hunts", this is not the case. We were given directions to the blind and drove my own truck there. In conclusion, if you want an actual hunt for hogs, do not use this bunch. As far as I'm concerned, it was downright fraud. The only thing that Paul is concerned about is taking your money and to **** with providing a decent product for monies paid. I repeat, DO NOT USE "WILDHOGHUNT.COM", you will most likely be sorry if you do. Written by: "Wrenchmaster" Posted on deertexas.com "rangerjohn" Posted on deertexas.com: Well I am 2 for 2 today. I hunted last summer with this guy and I bought 3 hog hunts off ebay for myself, a friend, and my dad. We got there and stayed in the new camp house which was not too bad. That is where the good ends and the bad begins. I paid for the hunt on ebay and everything was included, but I got there and, same old story, added fees for everything. The "guide" was his son, whom he does not pay. After collecting the money I thought it was odd that he packed up the other kids and his wife and took off to Fiesta Texas in San Antonio for the weekend. The food was bad - not even remotely good. I saw 3 hogs all weekend and I took about a 35 pounder. My dad saw none, and my friend shot the only one he saw - about 25 or 30 pounds. One man from LA took one about 150 lbs with a bow, but had to get it out by himself because no one was around to help him. We were told we had to bring corn for ourselves, and we had not even been there for 3 hours, and mine was almost completely eaten by the "pet" elk right out of the bed of my truck (got a nice scratch). Bottom line, I guess I need to do more research before buying a hunt online. Written by: "rangerjohn" Posted on deertexas.com http://www.texashuntingforum.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/100330/an/0/page/0 I am new to the forum and need to warn anyone thinking about hunting with these people. This is a fairly long post. They sell hunts on ebay and have a very convencing website saying they are overrun with "big, mean, wild Texas Hogs". Their website indicates that this will be a guided hunt and says you will see 50-100 hogs. They also go into great detail about the wonderful meals they prepare for you on the ranch. I hunted there last Wed-Fri. I drove from Dallas. There were 3 hunters from Oklahoma, 3 drove from Iowa, 2 drove from Ohio and 2 drove from Kentucky. All experienced hunters. The first day began with the staff telling everyone that a $50.00 gratuity must be paid before the hunting began...should have left then. Then we were sent out to various locations on the ranch to walk around an look for hogs...no guide, just good luck. Dinner was tacos, just tacos, nothing else you even had to provide your own drink although their website says soft drinks provided. The whole hunt was like this. There was a total of 1 pig shot. It weighed 65 pounds. A grand total of 6 pigs were seen. Many hunters saw no pigs. There were many exotics though. I think they want you to get so mad or frustrated that you shoot one of those and pay the high price for it. The staff on the ranch was rude and as unhelpful as can be. The guys driving from Iowa got to the ranch about 11am and were made to wait at the gate until 1pm, the time the 3 day adventure starts. We called Paul Candelaria, the owner, all day Thursday and even emailed him but have yet to get a return call. BE WARNED-DO NOT HUNT WITH THIS OUTFIT. I was really embarrased to be the loan Texan on this hunt and kept apologizing for the experience the folks from out of state had. Lunch on Thurs was make your own cold cut sandwich and dinner was no better. So, we took it upon ourselves to cook up all the white wing dove we had with us from a Tuesday hunt in San Antonio to try to show the out of towners some Texas hospitality. Thanks for letting me rant. Ken When I was hunting at Curtis's place, he and I had a discussion about one "outfitter"--and I think this is the same guy. Curtis told me that they always book the hunts at least 90 days ahead, so it'll be too late to leave feedback by the time the hunters actually go out there. Really disgusting, especially when there are some decent, inexpensive places to hunt hogs. I used to like Ebay (I have a feedback rating that's higher than 800, 100% positive), but lately it's become home to wave after wave of ripoff artists. I know this guy and he is charging fro every little thing he can. about 17 months ago a ofriend from Ks. went there and they told him if he wanted bait in the feeders he would have to buy some corn and place it in the feeder hisself. then he had a group of siteseers come thru as he was hunting in his lawnchairs in a powerline cut. there are a lot of sites that have warnings about this guy. I bought some of these hunts a few years ago on ebay and then made a surprise trip out to the ranch to talk to the hunters as they were leaving on sunday (I should have done this before I bought the hunts). Each person was very disapointed and said that they felt like they had been had. My group of friends and I asked for our $$ back from Paul, which he declined, and then we took it up with the creddit card company that we paid for the hunts with. They came through for us and refunded our $$ and gave the wildhoghunt guys the shaft. Thanks AMEX If you are going to go on one of the hunts on ebay check the feedback of the outfitter and contact people that are on their feedback list and ask them questions about the hunt. Many of the folks left feedback before they went on their trip, and they may have other things to say after they have gone. Another warning: I received an email today with "hog hunting" as the title. Upon reading further I saw a link listed. Guess what - WILDHOGHUNT. COM has ventured out from EBAY into the world of email solicitation. I had already received a heads up about this ebay seller from a guide I hunted with in Texas last year. Said to stay away from him at all cost. Because of the service I received from that guide, I was VERY prone to follow his advice. This came from their web site,is it true?Due to the concerns of properly handling wild hogs as stated by Texas Parks and Wildlife, effective June 12, 2006, it it now mandatory that the Ranch's staff handle the cleaning of all wild hogs. The cost is $35 per hog. Small exotics are also $35 to cape, gut, skin, and quarter. Large exotics are $150 each for the same service. If you look at the "explanation" for the mandatory processing fee, you'll see it's just clipped text from varied articles and not any edict from TPW. Nice scam. http://www.huntingclub.com/Community/Forums.aspx?g=posts&t=99690 Hey everyone, my wife put me into a drawing for a free hog hunt in Texas with North America Outfitters in Goanzales Texas. Apparently my name was drawn and as a result I have won a 3 day 2 night hunt. I get 2 hogs, 2 yotes and 2 bobcats and all I pay is my license, meat processing of $35 and a tip. This sounds way to good to be true. Can anyone give me any information on this. I must reply by Sept. 30th. Thanks for all information. bluedevil~I recieved the same free hog hunt. YES it's a SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The total cost is $35.00 a hog... for skinning & quartering. Plus $100.00 for the guides & $100.00 for the cook's. $270.00 plus your 5 day non res hunt'n license. So far the hunt is @ over $300.00. I realy don't think this hunt is FREE after all...Do U? FREE meens FREE to me....Meen'n no cost but travel to Texas & back home. That is why I'm not doing the hog hunt. To many hidden cost & blank information for this hog hunt. 10 Gauge Man This is a ripoff by Paul Candelaria. He also advertises as WildHogHuntTexas and a bunch of other websites. As others have pointed out, high costs, hidden costs and few animals. Dont get involved with this con artist. http://www.huntingclub.com/Community/Forums.aspx?boardid=1401&g=posts&t=115126&terms=paul+candelaria I can't recommend anyone, but I can tell you an outfit not to use. I had a bad experience with Paul Candelaria, Wild Hog Hunts. He advertises on this site for free hog hunts. Don't believe it. I had a high fence hunt on about 300 acres. Few hogs, poor accomodations, many extra costs and on and on. Please don't get sucked in by his false advertising. http://www.texashuntfish.com/app/view/Post/22406/If-you-don-t-know-what-your-talking-about-why-move-your-libs How many on here have heard or dealt with a man named Paul Candelaria? I have never heard anything good about his operations, yet as far as I know he is still in business. Until or unless enough people are willing to work with TP&W or some other state agency to get some form of licensing/regulating'complaint system set up. these type folks will continue to operate and give everyone else a bad name. It is a Catch 22, nobody likes getting taken or watching someone repeatedly cheat people out of money, but also, no one wants to see the goverment or a goverment agency step in and get involved. If nothing else. we need something like a Guides/Outfitters Association in Texas, but even that type of an organization will have its problems. Maybe there needs to be some kind of verifiable/reputable clearing house type reporting site set up that hunters/clients can send reports into about the various peoole they book hunts with. http://www.huntingforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28324 Has anyone here hunted with "Wild Hog Hunt" in South Texas or herd of anyone hunting with them??? I recently got invited to go their with some buddies in May and was just curious.. This sounds like the guy, Paul Candelaria, who has a bunch of different websites - Wildhoghunts, Texaswild hog hunts, Georgiawildhoghunts...and now as North America Outfitters. I had a bad experience with him and would not recommend him to my worst enemy. Lots of hidden costs, few animals, sorry food and lodging and on and on. If your already booked, SORRY NO REFUND. I hope your experience was better than mine.
