An unexpected goodbye

I'll try to make it short. We had to put down one of our 3 Quarter horses today:( Sunny was our oldest at 30 years and the mother of my sister's horse. My sister found her a little after 5pm lying in a puddle of water in the barn yard. We couldn't get her up and she wasn't trying to get up. We pulled off her soaking blanket, got some dry towels on her, propped her head up with a hay bale and I called the vet. Mom and andy were gone shopping, lol. I had a feeling this might be it...Sunny has not kepy any weight on this winter and despite feeding her more expensive older horse feed, she was just loosing weight. The vest listened to her heart, said sheh ad a murmur which she never had before, and her gums were ghost white. He thinks she may have had something like bleeding going on inside. We knew it was time. Mom and andy get home though just in time to say goodbye. She didn't seem to be in any pain but poor old mare...make me teary writing this.

We knew she'd probably be put down before next winter, but we weren't expecting this soon, because last year she fattened right up in the spring. God decides the times though so I guess this was her time to go. So now we are waiting to hear back from a neighbor who has a backhoe so we can have him dig a hole, but who knows when that will be.

Rest in peace Sunny:(

Sorry to hear this Ruth. Hard saying goodbye to a loved pet. Hard winters are tough on older horses for sure.

We have an old gelding that is a babysitter for the kids. He is 25 or 26 now, and I know he only has a few years left. Been feeding him the coop equivalent to nutrena's senior feed and also giving him alfalfa pellets and it seems to keep him pretty healthy. Fortunately our winter has been very mild and he has not lost any weight this winter.

thats always tuff to hear, we too have horse i think were up to 14. i don't know for me its harder to loose a horse than other pet, you get so attached to them, we've had pretty good luck over here but there have been a few occasions when the horses were playing and they broke their leg. My moms paint almost died last year due to having twins, its very hard for me when pets pass.. very sorry to hear your loss
