muggs
is when you read an article, read a thread here, or over hear people talking about it...it sounds like a bunch of broads talking about the last episode of Grey's Anatomy or something? It's either this or that fued, or talk about what two drivers sissy-slapped each other in the pits (with their helmets on no less). If you're gonna classify these guys as "athletes" then are the cast members of Days of Our Lives athletes too, because really, Nascar is a widely viewed Soap Opera. Why don't they just get on with it and race, ya know?

Why don't they just get on with it and race, ya know? You're right. If it wasn't for Nascar, ESPN wouldn't have much drama to report. I mean, Clemen's DNA is really newsworthy and not "soap opera-ee" at all. And I really care about who Tony Romo is dating and why he's losing games because of her. :D BTW--ditto on the WB.:D

Ohiobucks
Interesting views Eric. I suppose you think professional wrestling is fixed and not really a sport as well? :D
c_lou
I always laugh when the drivers get out and start pushing and shoving with there helmets on. Or how a 5'4" Jeff Gordon can push anybody around. If you want to be men, pull a Cole Trickle and have your chief change your tires and then roar out on the victory lap. Also, since wraslting was brought up. While it is fixed and is actually pretty funny to watch live, those guys are athletes. I read an interview that the real LT gave, when he wrestled BAM BAM. He said it was more demanding than the NFL. Of course being hocked up on Coke probably helped him get through the rigors of the NFL.
Nick
You dont think it takes some time spent in the work out room or some athletic ability to fight an ill-handling car for 4 hours at a time expecially in a fire suit when the heat index is well into the 100's? Do you consider a bowler an athlete? what type of athletic ability or physical effort does it take to throw a bowling ball accurately? It doesnt...them guys just have good hand-eye coordination if you ask me.
AdvantageTimberLou
You have no clue what it takes muggs to be a driver or even crew these cars. When you do then we can talk!! Welcome back, now don't you have a "cat show" or something that you need to attend. Maybe ESPN will be there to interview best of show!! Chrud
You have no clue what it takes muggs to be a driver or even crew these cars. When you do then we can talk!! No kidding. I'd love to see Muggs get in one of those race cars, take a few laps and get out and not have to change his drawers. He is a typical arm-chair sports fan though. BowJoe
Oh, an interesting morning indeed! So you're telling me Big Daddy V is an athlete? Don't get me wrong but this whole athlete of this sport vs an athlete of another sport is like comparing apples to oranges. You can't compare a 350 lb lineman for the Colts to a marathon runner from Kenya. Yet they are both athletes in their respective sports. These guys are drivers that have an awful lot of athletic ability. At least the ones that win do. As far as the drama... I guess NBA guys fighting fans and beating up the crowd is your idea of a serious, non dramatic sport? Or a wide receiver traded to every team in the NFL because of showboating and pulling out cell phones after a touchdown or spitting on fans after they score? Or baseball players having to go before congress for steroids testing? Or the NHL for... ok well the NHL doesn't really do anything as far as well... anything. Didn't they call the season off for lack of participation? Or was it lack of anything exciting happening at all. The only thing I've heard about the NHL is the guy that got his throat cut the other night. Other than that, I don't even think ESPN covers it anymore do they? Oh well... maybe they'll just keep it an Olympic sport so the guys that play it can root for it once every 4 years. LOL.

muggs
Well Joe, I guess this is what I'm getting at. When I talk football, I usually say something like "man, that 3rd and 12 play where Anderson hit Braylon was huge...that won the game for them right there." I don't talk about the pushing and shoving that goes on after the plays been whistled dead. But when guys talk Nascar, they say things like "man, Jr. is a whiner, I think him and Jeff Gordon are fueding." Or they talk about how two teammates are arguing or whatever. It's like the race itself is sencondary to all the other bickering and fueding etc... btw- if that Kenyan marathon runner was driving a car throughout the 26 miles marathon, I wouldn't consider him an athlete either. Tominator
OK, I was going to stay out of this, but you all forced my hand. Would "y'all" start spelling feud correctly? It's driving me nuts.
BowJoe
But when I hear about NFL, all I hear about is the comments made by whiners like Chad Johnson or TO or Romo and his bimbo and how they don't get along with their teammates either. So you are saying that it's bad to have an interest in NASCAR other than who won? That's close minded and hypocritical! In baseball, you have former teammates going to congressional hearings to badmouth each other and get them sent to prison! You don't see NASCAR drivers holding out on races to get more money and they are the second biggest sport on the planet with no unions to tell them what they should get as pay. See... people that work in NASCAR aren't ignorant little morons that get scouted in the projects by a guy from the NBA just so they can take a cut of their pay and leave them in the gutter when their knee blows out. These guys are sometimes as close as family and take care of eachother. Everyone is appreciated from the team owner right down to the guy that sweeps the shop floor. Show me where you see that in the other pro sports.
muggs
I hear ya, and what you're saying about what the media reports about baseball, football etc... is true. But I'm talking about what guys talk about over a couple beers or something. When I'm talking sports with my buddies, we don't bring up the Congressional hearings or T.O's antics. We just talk about the games. It seems like from the discussions I've heard and read about Nascar, guys are focusing on all the feuding (your welcome Chris) or the off the track stuff. I don't hear much about the races themselves. Reminds me of when I hear Sarah and her friends talking about McSteamy and how he's a jerk or something. Therefore it's thrown into our faces 24/7....and ESPN is ticked that the NHL won't pay up to get on ESPN so they put their highlights on the bottom of the list. Kind of the same way Arena football will be all over Sportscenter here not to long from now.

Well what else are they going to talk about? Other then/than the 15 minutes of a 4 hour race that are dedicated to analyzing one of the 2 or 3 wrecks that will happen, there isn't a whole lot going on. Oh wow....look at Jr go around that turn (5 second pause).....oh look he's going around that turn again, for the 147th time today!! It would be like watching a football game where the QB threw a 5 yard hook to the same receiver on every single play and maybe 2 or 3 times the guy either dropped it or somebody picked it off.
