craig mack
You dont think it takes some time spent in the work out room or some athletic ability to fight an ill-handling car for 4 hours at a time expecially in a fire suit when the heat index is well into the 100's? Do you consider a bowler an athlete? what type of athletic ability or physical effort does it take to throw a bowling ball accurately? It doesnt...them guys just have good hand-eye coordination if you ask me. Who said anything about bowling?
AdvantageTimberLou
I hear ya, and what you're saying about what the media reports about baseball, football etc... is true. But I'm talking about what guys talk about over a couple beers or something. When I'm talking sports with my buddies, we don't bring up the Congressional hearings or T.O's antics. We just talk about the games. It seems like from the discussions I've heard and read about Nascar, guys are focusing on all the feuding (your welcome Chris) or the off the track stuff. I don't hear much about the races themselves. Reminds me of when I hear Sarah and her friends talking about McSteamy and how he's a jerk or something. Funny thing with NASCAR drivers, you don't see them up in front of senators talking about steroids in their sport. The "real" athletes I guess are!! Take your pills & get your shots boys and girls (can't forget Marion), you need them to be strong and compete. If you want to go the natural way, and use muscle and brain, get into NASCAR!! Chumps backpedaling in front of Congress, yeah real athletes!!! Go to jail and if your lucky, you can get the SPEED channel and watch racing!!! Taking steroids would do nothing as far as we know to help improve their driving or you bet your butt there would be guys taking them. If you think otherwise, you are just being a NASCAR homer. Yeah you got me, injected your body with something is much better than an illegal carburator or illegal spring in the car. You stick and ball sports guys got no clue about racing, no clue at all!! Keep defending these chumps, our tax dollars are at work on Capitol Hill to hear these guys deny their use of illegal substances!!!
muggs
Either way Lou, Nascar is as guility of cheating as any of the real sports. But this idea sparked an interesting thought. Would injecting a driver with steroids help his performance? No, it would not. Would an illegal carburator or illegal spring in the car affect the driver's performance...yes it would. So, you see, that proves that the drivers themselves are not athletes. They are reliant on the car. Athletes rely on their body and physical ability, so steroids gives them an advantage. If they had to pedal to make the car go, they'd be athletes. But that huge interal combustion engine does the work.
AdvantageTimberLou
I guess what your saying muggs is........you can stick a monkey in the driver's seat and you couldn't tell the difference? The car is the real athlete! Man, what the heck have I been thinking all these years!! Better inform the pit crews to stop working out in the team fitness centers and that 300 to 400 lb. guys in poor condition can do the 13 second pits stops because the monkey behind the wheel don't care and the car does all the real work!! The car wins the race, the other factors are just a small part of the race equation!! Glad you cleared that up Muggs, for a minute I almost thought drivers and teams were athletes!!! LMAO Muggs my friend, save some money and go and experience a Richard Petty Driving school. If you want a thrill do Charlotte at night, been there, done that, its awesome. Its usually a one day program. Go out on a race track and let us know if any athletic ability is needed. Granted you will be going out in a race governed engine only turning about 5500 rpm and your overall speeds will be about 40 to 50 mph slower than a real NASCAR drivers will be (that is for safety reasons) but you will get the picture. You will only do it for 10 laps or so. They bring you in, get your feedback send you out for 10 more laps. Just image 500 miles for 3 to 4 hours, toss in some July humidity and 42 of your closest friends to race with and tell me what you think!!!! Athletes, in every sense of the word!! muggs
No, that's not what I'm saying at all. Just because something is physically demanding, doesn't necessarily mean it's a sport, or those who partake in it are atheletes. Heck, I could move files around the office all day and be dead tired...but that doesn't make me an office athlete, does it? Bottomline, the car is what separtes it. I don't consider jockey's athletes either.

BowJoe
Pronunciation: \ˈath-ˌlēt, ÷ˈa-thə-ˌlēt\ Function:noun Etymology:Middle English, from Latin athleta, from Greek athlētēs, from athlein to contend for a prize, from athlon prize, contestDate:15th century : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina Hmmmmm... I don't see anywhere that is says it has to have a stick or a ball involved in it to be considered a sport. They're athletes regardless of what your warped sense of the definition is in your little world. If you don't like NASCAR then just shut up about it unless it's to discuss something specific and not just to tick off the fans of the sport. It's that simple. You come here to bash it and you prepared your statements a few days ago to just tick off fans of the sport. You said the other day you were going to stir up some crap on here and you picked NASCAR as your little whipping boy. If you're not a fan then just leave it alone. Geez... some people just have to be jerks.

Guest Turtle
MR. Muggs, It's is not the number of posts I've made, but the number I've read thats helps me understand you. I frequently avoid posting in order to avoid senseless arguments when I really don't care what the other guy thinks anyway. That being said, I see your point about the soap opera and way most fans view NASCAR. This thread is a prime example. I am a true, diehard (did I need a hyphen there too?) race fan, but I am intelligent enough to know that it's a science not a sport. A competition , yes, but a sport, no. That's why it bothers me so much when Nascar manipulates the competition with their rule changes. It's supposed to be stock car racing, not let's make them all equal racing. But though this is not the Stock Car racing of old , they have in a sense just leveled the playing field. Now it is time, once again, for the engineers to figure out how to make them faster. AdvantageTimberLou
Someone call "Sports Illustrated" as I hear Dale Earnhardt Jr. is going to be on this week's cover. I thought they only saved it for "athletes!" Plain and simple Muggs does not understand the sport. If he did see what goes into it, he would realize you have to be athletic to be a part of it. He likes to stir the pot I give him that. Once he is married his internet time probably will be cut in half so that's good for all of us!! LOL!!! Between him getting married and going to cat shows I don't see how he even finds time to stir the pot on here!! LOL!!

That will be your first thing to do with your powers!! He can come back after the Homestead race. He'll leave us alone and talk about football then and those real athletes!!
