BowJoe
Here's my question for all of the people that are so sure drivers are not athletes. What, exactly, is your definition of an athlete? Because if you are so sure that the drivers and their teams are not athletes then you must know exactly what your definition of an athlete is otherwise your opinion counts for diddly squat. This is just another attempt to rile up NASCAR fans that understand the sport vs. people that have to see guys touching each other in order to consider it a sport. I think maybe there's something BEHIND all of this hating of a sport that doesn't involve physical touching vs. a sport where men are always fondling each other. C'mon muggs buddy. You can tell us, we're your friends. We won't judge you.
buckbuster11
If he did see what goes into it, he would realize you have to be athletic to be a part of it. So what athletic attributes do these guys put on display on race day? They sit in a car for 4 hours in 100 degree temperature. Is that your definition of athlectic?
VABuckSlayer
I'm not siding with Muggs here... I'm just being sarcastic. However... it's hard for me to look at Tony Stewart's physique and call him an athlete. It does take some stamina to drive those cars 400-500 miles no doubt. Look how Ricky Rudd looked after winning Bristol several long years ago. Poor guy was cooked! Some of the drivers probably ARE athletes. Carl Edwards is one but I don't know if you can label ALL Nascar drivers as athletes as a whole. Now keep in mind, I'm a Nascar fan from back in the Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker days. I've been working the races at Richmond for the past 20 years. So I'm not a Nascar "hater". It's just my opinion.

They sit in a car for 4 hours in 100 degree temperature. Is that your definition of athlectic? Could you do it? 100 degrees is usually a cool day. Try 120 to 140. I know because we measure the cockpit temperatures with our infrared. These cars during hot summer days are extremely hot inside. So then I can say golfers are not athletes, granted Tiger is built like a brick house but then look at John Daly!! Not much athletic ability to swing a golf club is there? buckbuster, I'm tired of trying to defend racing to guys that don't understand...you have your definition I have mine. Stay with the stick and ball chumps that are wasting tax payers dollars trying to say they didn't inject themselves with roids. What a bunch of jokers or should I say athletes?!! You want to see guys in their prime, I would put a Mark Martin or Carl Edwards up against anyone. These guys are fit! Then again so is Stewart but not in some guys eyes. You keep telling us we don't understand and I keep trying to ask questions so that you can make us understand but all I get is run-around. The only thing I am getting besides the "go stick to the stick and ball guys that are all jacked up on roids" comments is well "they sit in a car in 140 temps". And I am just asking you, does that makes them athletes in your opinion?? And what else do they do that makes them athletes? BTW---I'll put Mark Martin and Carl Edwards up against Jason Taylor and Bob Sanders........you still taking that bet?

Randyman
That's why it bothers me so much when Nascar manipulates the competition with their rule changes. It's supposed to be stock car racing, not let's make them all equal racing. But though this is not the Stock Car racing of old , they have in a sense just leveled the playing field. Now it is time, once again, for the engineers to figure out how to make them faster. Not to change the subject, but you can blame the legions of whining fans who get tired of watching the same 3 drivers win every week for this. And as far as engineering coming back into play, forget it, the COT is designed to take that out of the equation. Again, you can blame whining fans for that too. NASCAR is not a sport, it's a business, pure and simple. The same can be said for MLB and their payroll tax and the NFL and their salary cap. Manipulate so one or two teams don't dominate. Funny thing is, it happens anyway.
