wtnhunt
If it were deer only, would suggest a .270. Deer/elk, think a 30-06 or a .308 would be sufficient.
toddyboman
if you are going to start elk hunting I would go to the 300 mag..
drkillemquick
30-06!!!! If you want african game, 375 H&H
njbowhntr
300 RUM. With the new ammo that Remington has for it you can shoot different power levels. Level I is equal to .30-06, Level II is equal to .300 and then Level III is the full out .300 RUM.
Guest Scrape Maker
What about a 280 or a 7 mag.
aksheephuntress
best all around caliber... ...I would agree...the 30-06.
TexasDeerHunter
I would say 30-06. There are alot of other great calibers like the .280 , but the versatility and the availabilty of the '06 make it my choice.
Strut10
if you are going to start elk hunting I would go to the 300 mag.. +1 The 300 Win Mag is the undisputed king of versatility for all North American use. Groundhogs to Kodiak bears.......the 300 Win Mag is up to the job.
Guest Colorado Bob
Lots of guys swear by or at the 7 Mag. ---love it or hate it. It's just a glorified 270 IMO. The 280 doesn't turn my crank either. Especially if you don't handload. Hate to say it but the 30/06 is hard to beat-----It's never a bad choice. 300 Win Mag says elk hunting. I would also look at the 300WSM---but you are going with a single shot-----stick with the original 300 Win Mag. CB
Hoosierbuck
One rifle...go with the .300 WM, or WSM, or .338 WM, or .325 WSM, yeah, definitely. HB
Jorden
I bought a Pro Hunter 2 years ago in a 30-06. I mostly hunt deer but this past year I went elk hunting with it and shot my elk at around 200 yards...it dropped him right in his tracks
tped
If you think you would use it for elk - get the 300 Win as it will do everything you need. As Strut said "king of versatility"
snapper
Another vote for the .300 win. I shoot deer with mine and took an elk with it as well...can't go wrong with the .300 win. mag.
