Guest CSRoth
Someone had mentioned these in the Albino thread, I became interested There are only a few pics on the internet... Anyone out there ever seen one?? I know I haven't, but would LOVE to!
IowaDeerHunter
The top one was featured in NAW. Never seen the second one though. They sure are rare and awesome looking. Someone tell me though, it is illegal to shoot an albino in Iowa, does that make a "black" deer illegal?
wtnhunt
Nope, have not. Have seen the top pic numerous times, but never seen that second one. Far as I know here it is not illegal to shoot a black deer, but the regs specifically state that it is against the law to shoot an albino. Zambo
Way cool pictures. I have also seen the top pic and would love to see a wild black buck. Here in Minnesota you can shoot an albino deer but there is no mention of a melanistic regulation. I would have to do a full body mount. The good news is I could tell my wife that black goes with every thing. Ha Ha.
bfletch7441
I've never seen either of those before, but they sure do look cool. Ben

bluelund79
Never seen the black deer before, those are neat looking. Its illegal to harvest an albino deer in WI, but I have seen them a few times and they sure a pretty to see.
Randyman
My understanding is the melanistic deer are exceedingly rare, much more so than true Albino or all white deer.
Guest adrenaline_junky
I seen one two or three years ago in Kinsman, Ohio. I do know of a fellow who shot a 150" Black whitetail in PA, I seen it in the Pa Hunting News magazine.

wtnhunt
There was another one posted a while back that was taken by a kid that was also very cool, and from what I have read too, these deer are more rare than albinos.

GobblerBuster618
what a thrill that would be to shoot a buck like that!
TravisM
I have seen deer....not as black as that first picture, but more of a chocolate color like the second....it was dark enough that it did not have the white throat patch and no white around it's eyes. Believe me....I would have loved a shot at it.
Leo
The deer in the second picture was taken by a member of this forum. Maybe he'll come forward and give everyone the story.

When I first saw his pic I thought it was you. Yeah I thought that was Leo too! Either way, white or black I will pull the release or drop the hammer! ;) Why do some states make it illegal to shoot a deer out of its normal color? First of all, its a genetic defect, you would think they would want this out of the herd.
bulldawg
I was bowhunting one November morning, a long time ago, and saw what appeared to be a huge black dog coming towards me in an open field. It was about 9 a.m. The wind was blowing that way, and I just happened to glance out there. Then I got to thinking, I can clearly make this out way across the field...it must be bigger than a dog. I pulled up the binos, and zeroed in on a big bodied black buck, with a booner sized rack on it. It was possibly coming in to check out a fake scrape I had made a little ways from me. It was working it's way towards me, and had about 100 yards to go, when something spooked it back to where it came from. That was the first, and the only time I ever was graced with that buck's presence. It was a very rewarding hunt, though no deer was taken. HUNTINGMAN
I think I would rather have a black deer on the wall than a white one, very cool looking.
