Finding private land to hunt in Illinois is no easy task. I've lived here 37 years and never had a decent private farm to hunt on until 2 years ago. Even now there are a couple other hunters that hunt there, but thankfully only on weekends. I'm always keeping my eyes and ears open.

Posting here might help.

You might try looking at Pyramid State Park (public, but pretty good). They have regulations stating that bucks have to have at least 4 points on one side. I've seen some big deer come out of there and from what I hear it's not overhunted (at least not during the archery season). The park is in Southern Illinois and it's pleanty big enough (16,000 acres).

Good Luck with that one! Like the others said, be ready to "Pony Up" for the privilege! :(

My dad, brother, and I recently acquired bowhunting-only access to some private land just a few miles form my parents' house and to our knowledge, hasn't been hunted in years. We saw three very good bucks together on the property this past summer. The owner is a older farmer who we've known for quite awhile who doesn't hunt. We've asked for permission to hunt the property each year for the last few years and were finally granted permission. We've had moderate success gaining access to private ground using this system or trading wildgame meat we take for hunting access.

In addition to providing deer meat to the land owner, I also offer my assistance on his farm. I don't know a lot about farming but I have a strong back and have told him to give me a call anytime he needs help on the farm. He's yet to take me up on my offer. (He does accept the deer sausage).

Another thing you might try is start out by asking landowners if you could go shed hunting (Feb., March). Then after getting to know the owner you might later gain access for hunting.

i wanted to add also....I was born and raised in Illinois and even tho i know a ton of people I still have trouble maintaining a spot to hunt. The area i shotgun hunt wont allow bowhunters until after season and the area i bowhunt is about 7 acres in total and on the edge of town. I still think i am blessed in the areas that i hunt as of right now.

Good luck finding private land in Illinois to hunt. The guys that have it do all they can to keep it. Iv never hunted public land in Illinois. We own some big timber in Hancock county and have some leases in northern illinois. Always said I wouldn't pay to hunt but money talks i guess. It's really a shame but seems like anymore an outfitter owns it or its leased out already, or the landowner is fed up with all the crap. Good luck finding private property to hunt. I have been burned to many times and even been kicked out of some great spots beacuse some people just dont listen or they think its always better on the other side of the fence. Guess im just kinda sour on putting my hand out and havin it filled full of... well yea you get the picture. Not saying anyone here would do that, but the weekend warriors and people that don't appreciate what they have ruin it for us guys that care and respect what we have.
