CAPTAIN BIRD BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

For those of us that feed and watch birds, it is always exciting when a new bird you have never seen before comes to the feeder. It took us a while to figure out what they were. The book tells us that I am on the southern end of their winter range. I'm sorry the picture is a little fuzzy (shooting a pic through a window) but you can see enough to figure out what they are (the red birds). So can Captain Bird Brain figure out what they are?? I promise not to slam you like they do in the bird forums.:D

Chris, there are three birds in the pic. There is a smaller bird on top of the bird house sitting on the left side of the roof. Still think it is a redpoll.

Doh! I see it now, yep, that's a redpoll.

I'm not 100% sure on the other two, but pretty sure. The part that has me confused is that the top crossbill has a black head, and the bottom one does not, and their underparts are awfully white, and their tail looks too long to be a crossbill, but based on the picture, I'll stick with crossbill. Sure would be nice to see an upclose of the beak, then we'd know for sure. No other bird has the unique bill of a crossbill.

Peterson's guide says they're in Ohio, but I've never seen one.

Unfortunately my Realtree account is full and they don't give us mortals the unlimited storage space that you Mods get.

LOL, my account is almost full too Joe:eek:.

Did not think that the pine grossbeaks were supposed to be quite that red, and could not see the beaks that well in the pic either. Field guide I use, says the grossbeaks should have the pinkish red and grey colorings on males with the white bands on the wings. The darker colorings, almost black against the red had me leaning more towards the crossbills.

What about the other bird Joe?

Ding ding ding!!!! We have a winner!!!

The crosswings have the hooked upper bill and these birds do not. If I had a better picture you would see that. My bad.

Cool. We have a new captain bird brain.

I'll put my caveat into play.
