aksheephuntress
..Yeah, these guys ARE nasty....we got to see one out in broad daylight that was just running this ridge, last year while up in sheep country....Got to watch it for a while...it was a really special experience. I guess not a lot of Alaskans see one very often...if ever, in their lifetime, unless trapped. We actually trapped three last year....one, unfortunately was a female...but she was still alive when we checked traps that day! That was scary. ....We carry a .243 with us, plus a sweet .22 pistol tucked in a pack; a model 34 S&W. aksheephuntress
NIIICE! Thats one mean n nasty looking animal. Do you trap very many? What do they usually weigh? ...This one weighed 40 lbs...they are not usually this big. We trapped three last year...........have have gotten 5 others in the prev 3 years. We actually make only 3 or 4 set out for wolverine a year....cubbie set-ups , with leg-holds and snares around them. We use a 330 conibear in the cubbie . We use big chains to secure the traps / snares to trees, otherwise they will fight their way out of anything else. When we take care of a moose/grind/wrap meat, all the scraps get in ziplocks in the freezer , and that's what we use as bait for these sets, here. ...These guys are smart!!...We have caught several toes! ...They always come circling back around in 2 or 3 weeks, though. Trapping down here on the peninsula is more of a challenge than up north, in my opinion...the wet snow load buries your traps a lot. After we get them sealed at the close of the season,we send them off to a tannery.I like to sew skins, etc. We don't sell the furs...I guess we could...but we did give two to family in the U.P.,as gifts. We are going to full-body mt. this one; we did the same to one a few years ago, and rugged 2. ..We mostly trap beaver(good eating!), marten, ermine, and wolf. As a homeschool project, the kids boil-out & bleach the skulls, and we mount them on stained plaques.
stevebeilgard
beautiful animal. i've had 2 chances on them out in the wild, both times while sheep hunting. just couldn't make the noise to shoot them. i will next time....
