BLH
I'm looking to buy a new revolver for deer and bear hunting and was curious about the ballistics and knockdown power of the .454 casull as compared to the .44 Mag? Also, how does the recoil of the .454 compare? Thanks for any info.
aksheephuntress
........Go for it!!...The .454 isn't too bad....It is a bit more of a kick than the the .44,...and will blast a pretty good hole in that deer....A fun caliber to shoot, though! ....May I suggest the .45 caliber for deer??...there are lots of ballistic charts you can access online, too. There might be someone else with a better opinion on a handgun cal for deer, than me,though... .....As for bear, I carry a .44 mag for bear protection...but a .454, or even a canon will not always stop a bear, if the shot placement is not right. LifeNRA
I shot my fathers 454, it was not as bad as I thought it was going be! I would opt for the 454 casull.
WNY_Whitetailer
Been shopping around lately for either a Freedom Arms 83 in 454 Casull or a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. I have found a used FA83 for $1100 at my local gun shop...Maybe a little more than I wanted to spend...But, it is a top quality single action blaster. Now, the Redhawk is about $400 cheaper and it is new in the box. Decisions, decisions...I am hitting the auction sites to see what I can find as well. I already have the scope for this soon to be mine handgun...I purchased a Bushnell 3200 Elite 2-6x32 Firefly scope to be mounted when I purchase the gun. bowana
A Hot deer hunting load in the 44 would be a 240 grain bullet traveling at about 1350 feet per second. The 454 can push 260 grain bullets (I load Nosler) at about 1900 feet per second. The 454 is in a class with the 460 Smith and Wesson and the 445 Dan Wesson Super Mag. Recoil is a bit hefty, but manageable. If your going to use it for deer hunting, I would also get some information on the 460. I own all of these pistols. I have a 460 Revolver from the custom shop and it will shoot a true 200 yards at whitetail size targets. The muzzle velocity on the factory 200 grain bullet is around 2150 feet per second! That's as fast as a 444 marlin deer rifle! As stated above, if you can find a freedom arms Mod 83 in 454...buy it. This is a fine piece of hand crafted art work. One of the best revolvers that I have ever handled.
elkoholic
I own a Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull and it will definitely out perform the Ruger Redhawk 44 mag that I had. I would try to get a chance to shoot them both before making a decision but I do not think you could go wrong with the 454.
bluelund79
I appreciate all the input on someone elses thread, I am in the same boat as the originator....Gonna get it next month when I get home from school, making the extra ching for something new in the gun cabinet. Sounds like the 454 casull is the winner of the 2.....Ruger Redhawk for me.
huntinguide
the 44 mag doesnt hold up too the 454 the 454 is a 44 on steroids, very capable of 100+ yard shots with a good barrel and scope
coles
if you can afford it i would say go with the S&W 460. that way you can shoot the 45LC, 454, and 460 all out of the same gun and to suit waht you are hunting for
