Muff
Well I have been a volly fireman many years and tonight was the first time I had to do CPR on someone.....A older man was passed out when we got there...I stepped in and said I was trained in CPR and helped the ambulance guys do CPR....being on an Island we had to transport him to the mainland...a 20 minute trip.....I was beat by the time we got him there.....but I am sad to say he did not make it.....WOW life can end so fast....I think we all should kiss and hug our wife/husband and kids tonight and tell them how much we love them. Randy
I can only imagine what you went through tonight. I'm not really sure what to say other than I'm sure you did your best and there wasn't anything else you could have done. Thank you for doing what you do, and keep your chin up. I'd also like to thank you for the reminder to make sure the ones closest to us, know exactly how we feel.

OJR
Several years ago, I came upon a scene where an elderly gentleman had dropped when walking with his wife! Nobody was around other than those two! She was distraught and I tried to get him to come around! I have never been trained for CPR. It took the fire department over 20 minutes to get to us and they were only about 15 blocks away! A retired doctor was there and tried to help me! Neither one of us did any good! When the fire department and ambulance got there, he was already dead! Death comes quick!

jm23494
Hang in there Muff....I'm a vollie too, and it sounds bad but it gets easier to deal with each time. It's never an easy thing to deal with especially with the victams family/friends witnessing, but with time it will all work out. As someone stated it was all part of the master plan and nothing that you or anyone else was going to do would have changed the outcome. You did your best and that's what you have to realize. Hang in there!

PotashRLS
Nice job Muff. You are quite obviously bummed but you have seen something that most others will never ever see, a person whose life is dangling on threads and ultimately dies when in your care. Unfortunately I have done CPR a couple dozen times being in EMS and have defibrillated a portion of those. One was a neighbor out by our hunting property that my Dad went to high school with. None are with us today:(. The truth is......if CPR is needed, they most likely are not going to survive it. Unless CPR is started within the first seconds to a minute after the person arrests, they are not going to make it. Even then the odds are against them. The rules are Early Recognition, Early CPR, Early Defibrillation, and Early Advanced Life Support. The faster that "chain of survival" happens, the better your odds. Get Out There And Learn CPR Muff, you did a fine job. When it is their time, it's their time. God does his work through all of us and all who were on that call with you are better EMTs and FireFighters because of it. God Bless.... bowin_in_illinois
I'm a volly fireman too Muff...and although I haven't had to do CPR on someone, I do know what you are going through. I've seen a lot of bad stuff...and it's not easy. You have a great attitude about it, not letting it discourage you. We do what we can, and sometimes it doesn't work out...but when it does...it makes you understand why we keep doing it.
Muff
I just want to thank you all for your kind words....I am alright now...I may get a bit shook up when I go to the wake....but I guess thats part of it....I will be alright and life goes on....kiss your loved ones tonight.
