Draw Weight for Hunting?

I believe 45 is the min in IL.

I imagine a sharp broadhead could slip through a deer if placed properly with 30 lbs. In 06 I hit a 250lb. buck in the shoulder blade and only got 6 inches of penetration (I was using 65 lbs). I luckily found him 1/2 mile from the shot of the spot, but not until the next evening by which time the meat was no good.:( I would recommend 45 as the min.

Without going and looking through the state regs, I am pretty sure the annual handbook for this state does not specify a minimum weight limitation.

With the right placement and the right equipment, would think the poundage could be down as low 35 lbs and still be plenty effective, however I would not want to shoot a bow with a weight that light, as it might be pushing it a bit to get good penetration.

It would depend on local and state laws, but I wouldn't go lower than 40 lbs. He'll also want to use a good cut-on-contact broadhead that's about 85 grains, because penetration would start to be an issue. Yardage would probably be limited to 30 yards. I think there is a kid on here that's about 12 yrs old named Ty Weaver. He could probably tell you what he uses.

Hope this helps,

Dan
