Ethan Givan
What do you guys think the lowest draw weight is for cleanly harvesting deer? I am asking because my little brother who is 12 wants a bow to hunt with and he wanted to know what he had to be able to draw back to hunt. I was thinking about 40# would be the lowest. What do you all think?
8ptbuckpa
check with your game commission some states have minimum requirements but 35-40 would be the lowest i would go
Hardwood_HD
40 is the lowest we are allowed to shoot here.. i killed my first deer with 40lb compound
Dubie
40 (maybe 45, I'm not 100% sure) is the limit here. Its also plenty to kill a deer with the right arrow and the understanding your range is much more limited then a big bow....
fly
I believe 45 is the min in IL. I imagine a sharp broadhead could slip through a deer if placed properly with 30 lbs. In 06 I hit a 250lb. buck in the shoulder blade and only got 6 inches of penetration (I was using 65 lbs). I luckily found him 1/2 mile from the shot of the spot, but not until the next evening by which time the meat was no good. I would recommend 45 as the min. muggs
I believe 40 lbs. is the minimum here in Ohio (but I could be wrong). That should be more than enough, just play with the weight of your arrow and tip and if you get the right combo you should be able to get plenty of penetration with a 40 lbs. bow. Ethan Givan
I dont think we have a limit here in Kentucky but Im not positive. Anyone from Kentucky on here that knows if we have a draw weight limit? Thanks for your input guys.
Bowtech_archer07
40# is the legal minimum here in IL. I think that is the lowest that you could cleanly harvest an animal. I killed my first deer 1st deer at 25 yards shooting about 40 pounds and it was a clean harvest.
LifeNRA
I believe 35 pounds is the minimum here in PA.
arrow32
Here in WV it is 40 along with Ohio. But shoot 40 is more than enough to kill a deer with a bow. I shot my first with a bow shooting 40 pounds. Inless your hunting those big Ohio bucks.
dogdoc
40 or 45 here in Oklahoma. Plenty of deer killed with 40#'s
wtnhunt
Without going and looking through the state regs, I am pretty sure the annual handbook for this state does not specify a minimum weight limitation. With the right placement and the right equipment, would think the poundage could be down as low 35 lbs and still be plenty effective, however I would not want to shoot a bow with a weight that light, as it might be pushing it a bit to get good penetration. rhine16
I would think 35 would be the lowest to go with. Think he could at least get that being 12. I started at 10 and was pulling 40.

dbHunterNY
It would depend on local and state laws, but I wouldn't go lower than 40 lbs. He'll also want to use a good cut-on-contact broadhead that's about 85 grains, because penetration would start to be an issue. Yardage would probably be limited to 30 yards. I think there is a kid on here that's about 12 yrs old named Ty Weaver. He could probably tell you what he uses. Hope this helps, Dan
